Stalled wont start in cold weather. in warm garage now. where is the fuel pump. should we remove fuel filter and drain fuel line. need to start soon. thank you.

My 01 silverado HD does not start immediately like it used to. A mechanic explained that the fuel pump is a closed unit which delivers fuel at a measured pressure and that a common symptom is a decreasing amount of pressure and thus inconsistent starting until the pump eventully fails. He stated as a chevy dealer mechanic he saw it alot.
My engine is fuel injected, does it have a cold start enrichment valve and if so, where is it located? Second, this sounds a bit contrary to what I was told, what do you think? I would be willing to change out whatever is required, I dont like breaking down.

THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED IN THE FUEL TANK. IF IT IS WORKING YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR IT SQUEALING WHEN THE KEY IS TURNED TO THE RUN POSITION PRIOR TO ACTUALLY STARTING THE VEHICLE. IT WILL BE A HIGH PITCH. IF NOT THEN THAT WOULD BE A STARTING POINT. ALSO FUEL INJECTED CARS HAVE A COLD START ENRICHMENT VALVE THAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM. THIS VALVE CAUSES A MOMENTARY FUEL RICH SITUATION SO THE ENGINE CAN START. IT IS BASICALLY A CHOKE FOR FUEL INJECTED ENGINES.

CHEVY HARD START

The most common cause of this is that the pressure check valve in the outlet of the electric fuel pump is leaking, this allows the fuel in the lines and filter to drain back into the tank and this causes the symptom you are having, it is an exact fit. The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank and the tank must be removed to replace the fuel pump. Please rate my help for Fixya.

Stalling when cold

Have you changed your fuel filter? Pump ok otherwise would be doing it all the time. Injector pump on some of these has a thermal advance solenoid on the side of the pump If so check power going to it Also check glow plugs and after timer

Fuel pump not running only in cold weather

Pumping the pedal on an injected engine does nothing, except varying the air intake amount. I would change the fuel filter (if badly plugged, it may be causing the pump to shut off early) and clean the idle air control valve.(which should regulate idle air flow, eliminating the need for playing with the pedal) The valve itself is not difficult to service, but is a bit delicate. It can be cleaned with carb cleaner. just make sure you do not turn the valve end around while cleaning, and re-install it perfectly straight. You may have a bad drain back valve in the pump, but this is less common than what I outlined above.(there are tests for this)
