SOURCE: 2001 Forester, Rough idle and engine loping driving at low rpm

I had a similar problem on my 2002 Impreza RS 2.5 (same engine and engine control system). In my case it was the O2 sensor on the intake manifold. This happened at 34,xxx mi. so it was covered by the warranty. Replacing the part is very easy. (two bolts and a wiring harness). Obviously I would start simple and cheap and work your way to expensive and difficult.
From my understanding its all caused from the engine missfiring. If its been a while or never, I'd change the spark plugs first. (stick with the Subaru Parts plugs, I went after market and the dealer claimed the plugs were not the correct "temperature" and had to pay for the new plugs and install although they did it without my permition. Thats a whole nother story).
Could also be the manifold pressure sensor.
Either 02 or manifold pressure sensor may cause intermitent check engine light.
Where I live Brookline,MA , Autozone will run a free diagnostic on your car by hooking up to your ECU and will give you the trouble codes and possible remidies. Of course there are no guarentee's but it will point you in the right direction.
Good Luck

SOURCE: 2004 subaru forester, 99,000 miles. Check engine

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the great suggestion . I'll have Autozone read the codes on Monday. Thanks again!"

SOURCE: subaru impreza rs 2.5 insanely high idle

check you dont have a split in the corrugated pipe from the maf to the swirl chamber (the big black plastic tank attached to the inlet manifold) or a leak into the intake somewhere, doesnt have to be a small vac tube.

Also you may have a sticking TB butterfly as my learned friend suggested.

SOURCE: My Subaru legacy grandwagon has started cutting

You could have a number of problems. First do a complete tune up, proper timing, new plugs etc.

Turn the key and do not give it gas. If it starts slowly give it gas and let me know what it does. I suspect it will cut out. In that case, you might have bad injectors. Let me know if I can be of further help

SOURCE: High idle

Your car may not have recieved a recall on 02/201998 on the vehicle speed control recall id from NHTSA98v035000. the throttle shaft ball bearings on the sensor side of the throttle body assembly was not insalled in certain throttle bodies. Operation of a vehicle with a missing throttle shaft bearing can eventually lead to an incomplete return of the throttle valve resulting in a high idling condition. 61115 vehicles were affected. Take vin number to dealer see if your vehicle has been inspected for this missing bearing.

Idles@2500 rpm until engine warms up

old post
all do, everyone. but. the devil really is in the details with EFI.
this IAC valve does that,
to speed it up warm up , put in a 195F thermostat.
this assumes 800 RPM is hot.
most of these engines, do this. new. bewlow.

1: cold start, for 3 to 15sec, 2500 rpm , worse in alaska.
2: then the above DASH pot closes and IAC takes over, at ~1200
3: then as engine heats the IAC closed inch by micro inch a
its now 100% closed and the ECU not controls idle hot.
using the modulated ISC,
there is a fast idle feature on this year, 950 to1000 rpm hot
with these turned on.
1. headlights hot.
2: defrost glass, rear.
3: heater fan on.
4: a/c on if opted.
other wise 800 is normal hot.

Engine runs in idle +/- 2500 rpm

When i start the car the engine racces to 2500 rpm why?

This is normal idle control strategy, it races up to keep the engine from stalling out until it stabilizes, if it doesn't drop back to normal idle speed of about 600 RPM after a few seconds (longer on cold start up) then you need to have the electronics tested to see what the problem is.

Chevy Malibu Cold Idle Problem

Check the water coolant thermostat. If it is stuck in the "open" position you are heating up all the water in the coolant system and this will take time. The thermostat keeps the water in the engine until warmed up to almost normal running temperature, only then does it allow the coolant to enter the radiator.

I turn on ignition and vehicle starts to idle real high seems like accelarator cable is sticking

Hi Clucas, If you're talking about a cold engine, the vehicle is fitted with an automatic 'up idle' system. Depending on how cold the ambient temperature is. The colder it is outside the higher the idle, until the engine reaches normal operating temp. The engine should then settle down to the correct idle speed. If however the cold start raises the speed to more than 1350, have a scan carried out. If the idle speed is always at a high rpm, do the same.A leakage of air into the intake manifold can also cause the latter problem. A leakage however will not be evident via a scan. Regards Johngee10

2002 Wrangler 4.0 idles too high in park.

normal for an engine to start at elevated rpm and then die back as it takes a few seconds for the ECM doing it's sensor checks and idle back to the correct idle speed
check the idle rpm with an external rpm counter as most in dash units are inaccurate at rpm lower than 1000
as for the temperature
If you have a climate control module, it uses a mixture of heater and ac to maintain the temperature that you have set
so check it for operation

Heaters randomly blow cold, idle jump

Make sure your anti-freeze is full in the radiator.. If it is low, the heater is the first to go, but you wont see signs of overheating.. This I believe is also contributing to your idle fluctuation.

Honda Accord 1991 idles high then low

)The fact that thge engine idle fluctuates when it is cold indicates that the Fast Idle THermo Valve is out of adjustment.
This valve is located ot the front of the intake manifold on the driver's side just below the accelerator cable. To adjust it, wait until the engine is cold (best to do it first thing in the morning).
Remove the two screws holding the cover on and start the engine. There is a brass needle sticking up through a plastic ring that has two slots in it. With the engine idle fluctuating, use a thin flat blade screwdriver to SLOWLY turn the ring CLOCKWISE
until the idle stabilizes. Once done. put the cover back on withg the two screws and you should be done.
