I have a 2000 vw beetle.  this morning the check engine light came on and i drove it about 60 miles today.  when i got home, i checked the oil, and it is EXTREMELY low on the dipstick.  i looked underneath the car and there was a trail of oil on the garage floor.  question: can i put oil in it to drive it tomorrow and monday i'm taking it to get serviced. if i add oil, will it be ok to drive and not harm my engine even though the check engine light is on?

Yes you can add oil as you go. this will be fine. Just dont make a habit of it as you can never tell where your oil level is without looking at the dipstick.

Vw beetle running hot and we cannot find a leak

The problem sounds like your radiator its 12 years old clogged with sediment and losing pressure at the cap or
vapor loss right through the aluminum you can't see it .Its a mist at driving speeds not at ideal .
Do a pressure test on the system 14.6 lbs per sq " also check the heater core both in and out hoses should be hot and have good water flow .
The problem isn't your water pump .
Also look at your spark plugs take them out . If they are burn white the vehicle is not getting enough fuel .

I just bought a 2000 beetle turbo ,it has 70,000 miles on it the person which I bought it from has kept really good care of the car ,what should I consider doing to it maintance wise , since it just turned...

first thing on a turbo, do an oil change using full synthetic oil. If you can, plan on replacing plugs and plug wires, replace antifreeze, and check brake linings. VW Beetles are tough to work on (little room), and it would also be a good idea to check hoses and belts, cleaning the engine.

2001 beetle, 8,000 miles on a rebuilt motor, check engine light is on. What do I check first? Am looking at purchasing this car. Have no manuals to refer too. The light was not on when I drove the car...

Have the the VW scanned for the DTC codes, there are to many things that can cause the Check engine light to come on. It could be as simple as a faulty gas cap to a bad O2 sensor.
Auto Zone scan free of charge and can give you the suggested method of addressing your engine's issues.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck

98 VW Beetle Check Engine light

Could be a lot of things, take it to autozone. More than likely they can scan the code for you, they can't tell you exactly what is wrong but they can steer you in the right direction. Give them a call to see if they are able to scan the codes on your VW. Good luck.
