1997 Ford Explorer with 4.0 SOHC is flooding out at start

Work4it1,

Thanks for the previous help. I changed out the fuel pressure regulator and went to start the explorer this morning and it did the same thing and flooded out. I have to pull the fuel pump relay to burn the excess fuel then install it back in to start it. It works but what do you think it could be? The fuel pressure was 40 psi on cranking during start up. Any ideas?

Its sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is bad locate the regulator on the fuel rail and remove the vacuum hose if there is fuel there its bad if not have some one turn the key on or crank the engine if fuel come out its bad. What seems to be happing when it sit for some time the regulaor leaks fuel by into the engine when you go to start it its just that its flooded out plus when you turn the key on and are trying to start it its now dumping even more fuel into the engine. When you remove the relay and crank it there is no fule going to the engine thus making it start.

NO you dont have to take the intake off it should be right on the fuel rail with either 1 or 3 bolts if i remember right it will be the only thing on the rail with a vacuum hose on it.

97 s10 4.3 vortec..flooding when engine is hot. Went from 24 mpg to 13. Changed fuel pressure regulator. egr valve.Plugs, wires, cap and rotor button. Fuel pressure stays between 55 and 61 at all speeds,...

The fact the fuel pressure does not hold after the pump stops is a big problem indicating a fuel leak into the upper manifold, which would cause the flooding. This leak could have several causes, but since the problem is still there after replacing the regulator, it sounds like the problem is with the injector in the spider assembly.
It sounds like you have a design 1 spider assembly, with only one fuel injector distributing fuel to the six poppets. If that is the case, I suggest you try replacing the entire assembly (which will include a new regulator) with the Delco design 2 version which has injectors on each poppet.

While starting my 2002 Ford Explorer sometimes it acts as it is flooded and will not start unless I put my foot all on the way down on the accelerator. I believe that this started when I came out of store...

well theres two things that could be happening. first would be the most obvious and to say the fuel pressure regulator is bad. simple test for that would be to pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator, and check for fuel in the vacuum line, if so it needs to be replaced. if not the next answer would be if you take lots of short trips without getting the engine warm, the engine will actually flood. its because the EFI tells the injectors to stay open longer and to dump more fuel in the cylinder just as a choke on a carb would do, and if you shut it off during this time it can actually flood the cylinders with fuel.

1992 F150 5.0 flooded

Hi, wow!

sounds bad, I would drain the oil and leave it over night to drip out so it is completely dry, leave all oil caps an anything that will allow air in off the truck.

Do you have a compressor or air line you could use to blast air through the engine. if this is diesel fuel then it will take much longer to evaporate if this is gas/petrol then over night should do it.

Hope this helps

1991 ford explorer seems to be floding out

Either the fuel pressure regulator is out of whack, or the o2 sensors are making the car give to much fuel, or the plugs need to be changed. If your check engine light is on, then you may need to change throttle position sensor.

Fuel Pressure Problem on my 1996 Ford Explorer (4.0 V6)

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is going bad...this will cause the fuel pressure to be high and create a flooding condition. Which in turn will gas wash the motor and contaminate the O2 sensor with excessive fuel. Check fuel pressure with a gauge at the valve you are using to relieve pressure. You can find pressure specs on-line for that particular vechicle. If pressure is high...replace regulator, O2, change oil and reset computer by disconnecting battery for ten minutes...

it does sound like the relay is working part time and not all the time...you might want to go ahead and replace it just to find out for sure.
