My 1991 Toyota Corolla drives fine and then suddenly the check engine light comes on and it starts to hesitate and can stall. Sometimes patting the accelerator aggressively can relieve the hesitation for awhile but then it continues. It can happen at all speeds. it always starts again, but can just idle for a few seconds and then stall again. My observation is that it occurs when the engine is hot...after driving for 10 miles or more.
Mine did the same thing and it was oxygen sensor
since engine light came on there should be an error code
on computer.Get a diagnostic checker or take to a garage and have them hook uo to the diag connector. I bought a diagnostic checker few years ago and it has come in very handy

it could be TPS or MAP. corolla dont call it a map but its on the firewall near the brake booster check your vacume lines see if any have come off or cracked or dry rotted. vacume leak could be the problem. there are a lot of them to check.

If you have had a bad enough problem with the fuel filter, and it is not the fuel pump I would have to say it is the injectors. If your car is fuel injected there could be dirt in the injectors in which case they will need to be replaced. The problem is you can flush the whole fuel system except for the fuel injectors themselves. Though I am not sure how to check them myself, a mechanic could tell you if this is the problem in minutes. I cant say for sure if this is your problem but I have a 79 corrolla and it is doing the same thing and since I have replaced almost the whole fuel line except for the injectors themselves this is what I am leaning towards. check rom the air fiter box there a air hose that goes to engine check if that air duck hose is not crack or broken repair with electric tape if broken or crack if everything goes fine after the repair change that hose or leave it like that with a few layer of tape its a cheap repaIR THANKS PIERRE

It sounds like you may have picked up some small debris from the bottom of the gas tank when you ran it empty. You may need to run a fuel/injector cleaning solution through the next tank of gas to clear the debris and consider changing your fuel filter too. Sea Foam is a great fuel additive and I recomment trying it full strength. Hope this helps!
