The check engine light comes only when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test
Take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve the codes from the computer. Most part stores will do the scan for free. The check engine light comes on to indicate that the computer has noted a fault in one of the car's systems. Getting the codes will show what faults the computer has noted and what system is affected. Hope this helped and best wishes.
