The check engine light comes only when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test

Thought I would add that I have had the car at the garage and the oxygen sensor was clogged, this has been cleaned out and I have only to run it on a branded fuel as supermarket fuel has caused the problem, so far - so good.

If this fails then I need a new oxygen sensor, which is not too expensive

    Thanks again for the help

I really doubt the diagnosis,. replace the sensor, O2 sensotrs don't clog

The light is no longer illuminated though?? Could the sensor be faulty?? If it is now running properly, should I wait to see if it comes on again or bite the bullet and replace the sensor??

the light may take up to 100 miles to come back on.

the system must complete self testing, this is called a OBD2 Drive Cycle

Thanks, will get the O2 sensor replaced as soon as it comes back on, think he actually said it became contaminated due to additives in supermarket fuel, if that makes any more sense

Obd2 p0700

Hi John:
DTC P0700 - Transmission Control System Malfunction
Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults.

If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory.

This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM's memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module.

Symptoms of a P0700 DTC may include:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination
The transmission may exhibit drivability problems like slipping, etc.

More often then not, the cause of this code is that there is a transmission problem of some kind. The TCM detected the problem and set a code. P0700 means that a fault code is stored in the TCM. However this doesn't rule out the possibility of a failed PCM or TCM (unlikely).

Possible Solutions:
For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission.

If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself.

there were no efi engines in 54 so guessing that it is either a 95 , 04 or 14 plate plater vehicle
run the fault codes to determine the exact fault
most probably the EGR system that is faulty

The malfunction indicator lamp has come on, what does it mean.

malfunction indicator lamp or MIL, means that something is out of specifications from what is expected by the computer.

Have the car scanned with an OBD-II compliant scanner that covers 1996 and up vehicles.

You can buy your own at Walmart or Sears for under $100.

Lacetti Chevrolet. Malfunction Indicator light is on.

It may be the same problem as my 56 plate Lacetti. The yellow malfunction light came on two weeks ago and two days ago, both times shortly after filling up with petrol to the brim, and I suspect it is the petrol sensor as I only clicked the petrol cap once after fitting it back - the handbook says click it several times. The yellow light also came on yesterday after taking the car a short journey so it is likely that the sensor is still picking up a small escape of petrol, but the car has been fine today with no light appearing now that the fuel level has dropped a bit. Like you, I have not noticed any drop in power with the light on.
