Tip & How-To about Chevrolet Silverado 1500

One thing every vehicle owner should have in the trunk next to your survial kit!

One of the best investments a person can make is going to the auto parts store and spending the $20 or so for a simple shop manual for their vehicle.
Stuck in the middle of nowhere trying to figure out what happened !
Need to know how to get the tail light bulb changed? Want to know where the dipstick is or how to change the oil and what tools you need. Want to change the crank position sensor.? Want to know what the crank position sensor is, what is does and how to tell if it is bad?

BUY THE SHOP MANUAL for your make and model and they will tell you step by step instructions with reference pictures how to do it even down to the tools and what order to take things off.

You don't have to go out and buy the big professional shop manuals as they can cost hundreds of dollars and are harder to read than bad novel for the untrained.

Haynes puts out a nice simple one for the average owner as does Chilton's and a few other publishers. Just make sure you get the one marked for your year and model .

a repair center said i need 4 heater hoses and and 8 hose clamps replaced on my 1993 lexus sc300. they wanted $406 for parts and labor. this seems overpriced. is it an easy fix i can do at home and is there a way to buy the parts myself for cheaper than they are offering?

Repair shops add 20% to parts

You first try an auto parts store
Look on NAPA.com to get an idea of price

If you have to, you go to the dealers parts
counter for whatever auto parts may not have

$406 sounds about right

When you buy the parts, then try to install
them, you will get the price picture and appreciate
the automotive techs job a little more

Can I service my Audi A4 myself?

Certainly. Get the Haynes Repair Manual on your vehicle from the local Auto Parts store and it will explain the steps in each service and identify any special tools that may be required.

For this instance and future ones, I recommend spending (investing) in an aftermarket service manual from Chilton's or Haynes. They cost ~ $20-$30 US and can be had at nearly any chain parts store. They have cautionary notes, lots of pictures and illustrations and even if you turn over your Jeep to the 'tender mercies' of a repair shop, you can get a rough idea of what they are doing and how much it should cost.

The best way to do that outside of having your own personal mechanic is to purchase a repair manual from Auto Zone or some other parts retailer. They have step by step repair instructions with photos based on a complete teardown and rebuild of your car. I have used Haynes Repair Manuals and they are around $20-25 each. Best investment for a used car owner.

Go to Auto Zone or some other retail auto parts store and buy a Haynes Repair Manual [about $20] for your make and model. It will show you step by step instructions with pictures on how to repair just about anything on it. Best investment when you are repairing it yourself.
