Trouble shooting P0420 code, bank 1, OBD II for 2000'?

Our 2000 civic (engine D16Y8) has P0420 OBD II code along with misfire on cyl 3 and 4. I changed out the plugs and the distributer cap. Can't get the rotor off yet. Engine running like almost new now despite 178k miles but I am sure when the OBD resets the P0420 code will be back. Dealerships around here have told me the catalytic converter needs replacing but they all want over $1200. That seems insane even for a dealership. I am looking into doing it myself with an "Eastern Direct fit" but before I do wanted to know if anyone thought it could be faulty bank 1 oxygen sensor, if there is a way to test it myself, or is it worth it to replace the sensor first and then check again and move to converter if necessary later? Also has anyone ever used changed out converter with Eastern Direct fit bolt in?
Thanks for any advice,
Dwight

misfiring can cause a P0420 code.
I would recommend a set of honda plug wires and plugs if the P0420 code returns.
I have used bolt in aftermarket bolt in catalytic converters but don't remember the brand name they fit ok and i have had 1 or 2 return with a P0420 code out of about 20. I have never replaced the oxygen sensor on a civic like yours.
I always fix the misfire problems, reset the computer, and have the customer drive it and see if the code p0420 returns. 50% don't have the P420 code return. drive it and see what happens and go from there.

my 2000 honda civic engine light on code p1456

2000 honda civic with engine light code p1456 how can i get the light off

Hey I had the same code and I have a 2000 honda civic lx. My cousin works at honda and drives a '96 honda civic and he has had that code before on his car as well.

First thing he came up with was that the catalytic converter was cracked. We checked mines, and lo and behold, that's what it was.

Look under your hood, and there should be a catalytic converter with a sensor sticking out of it. It is connected to the exhaust manifold and the sensor sticks out of the heat shield. Around the sensor, look for a crack. If there's a crack, that's your problem.

hi my cruise main green light will not turn off

hi my cruise main green light will not turn off and i didn't turn it on... i pressed delete and this did not work

I had the same happen on my Accord. Turning the car off and on didn't fix, either did pressing the brake nor pressing the cancel button for cruise control. But I pressed the cruise button, that turns on cruise control, and the light went out. I'm now wondering whether I need to take the car in for service, since I don't know what caused this to come on and to not go off with brakes or cancel button.

changed out dead battery and horn wont stop

Hello.
Changing out the old battery, you may somehow shorted something out in the car. You can check this by seeing if you have any power going to the lights on the car and what ever else that uses the power when you turn on the key. Newer cars like yours usually cant short out, but if the lights and other stuff dont work when your check them, disconnect the battery and look for the fuse panel. Check ALL your fuses and make sure none of them have been blown. You can check that by seeing if the filament in them looks to be burnt or broken as if it popped.
You can also check and make sure that the negative battery terminal is on tight enough. Sometimes a bad ground can mess everything up. As your doing this, before your reconnect your battery, go under the hood of your car and disconnect the horn. This will allow you to work without the horn blaring. To disconnect the horn, its just a wire with an end that simply slides over a metal tab, just give it a pull and it should come right off. You may have two horns so check both sides of the radiator. Hope this helps!

You don't necessarily need a new converter. I had this code on my 2006 Odyssey at around 150,000 miles for both the front and rear converter and only needed new downstream O2 sensors ($40 for the back, $60 for the front). This is why my car never sees the inside of a dealership shop, they're happy to replace your converter for >$1000 without even looking at the problem. A little troubleshooting goes a long way here. I grabbed an engine code reader from the local auto parts store and read the O2 sensors with the engine running and noticed the voltages on them were erratic, and they shouldn't be. Mine were reading ~ 0.8 volts, then would jump down to < 0.1 volts for a couple readings, then back up to 0.8. The downstream sensor readings should be fairly stable.
