It sounds like you have a leaking engine cylinder head gasket, the combustion gas causes the coolant tank to pressurize and that is what you see.

jump it with another car and press the button, and voila, it opens.

Can you wiggle the fan front to back when the engine is off? If so, check to see whether it is the water pump or the fan clutch and replace as required....

Internally there are flap valves that close or open the vents.I'm betting that the passenger side one is stuck closed, or the one that routes the warm air is stuck open
