TV powers on. Screen lights up but is initially covered on the upper third by dark broken lines which gradually fade to the top edge of screen and the screen becomes white. When the problem first started the TV would eventually work but took longer and longer to become okay. Eventually it would work no more but remains in the white screen state".

Depending on the age,as you did not mention, you could have a contamination inside the surface of the Picture tube in the liquid coolent or silicon spacer in between the crt and the lens assy. This will get worse with time and will happen most likly again on the other tubes unless you have a pro come out and replace the liquid and refill with fresh stuff. Its not a job for the unexpirenced person with TV sets. You may want to think about another set depending on the age of this set and the Estimate you get on this set. Good Luck

Focus and brightness (sometimes called screen control) are usually adjusted in the flyback transformer. Check for a bad connection where the flyback is soldered to the board. This could also indicate a problem with the CRT.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
