I have bought a secondhand ryobi cw 1440 circular saw with no instruction manual and am unsure how to change the blade. there is a nut holding the saw blade onto the machine which i have a hex key to fit, however as it is attatched to the blade, when i turn the nut it also turns the blade so there is no loosening. short of holding the actual blade in the palm of my hand i cant figure out where to hold to stop the blade spinning when i turn the nut(and im not willing to do that - its sharp)
thank you

I'm not sure if you have a chop saw or circular saw. Either way, it sounds like the nut and washer are not tight enough to hold the blade. If you have a circular saw clockwise will tighten the nut and washer onto the blade and hold it in place. Most chop saws are a left hand thread and then you would turn the nut counter clockwise to hold the blade tighter. The blade wobbles because it is not tight.
UNPLUG THE SAW first!! Look for the blade lock on the top or front of the motor body, Hold the lock button down while turning the blade nut with a wrench. After a bit you'll feel the lock button engage and hold the blade firm. Rotate the the wrench counter clockwise and remove the nut, Slide the blade out from under the guard and replace with a new one. Reinstall the nut following the above procedure.
The shoulders on the washers have to be properly aligned with the hole in the saw blade so the nut can tighten properly. Are the washers turned the right way? Try flipping one or both the opposite direction.
-Remove the blade cover.
-Loose the nut that hold the blade. Loose the blade tension.
-Remove the old chain then put new one in. Tight the tension to
to good or until the chain still turn smooth. (Not over tight)
Tight the locking nut.
-Put the cover back.
You're done
Most power saws will have a small button on the frame, generally hidden but you'll find it if you have a good look. Push on the button and turn the blade gently. The button should lock in and lock the blade and then enable you to undo the securing nut.
should be a black button between the handle and the guard. Spin the blade until it depresses all the way down and you should be able to loosen the blade.
near the guard should be a button u hold and rotate blade(unplug
first)until it locks, some old and cheap saws have no lock pin, so lock
blade with vise grips and let rest against base plate and loosen nut
unplug saw
new Ryobi have a spindle lock button, it is unobtrusive and you may miss it
If yours does not, secondhand etc, a screwdriver in the blade teeth between the upper and lower guards provides a locking bar enough to undo the arbor bolt
