The C310 will accept SD cards up to 2GB in size and SDHC cards up to 32 GB. 1GB SD cards are getting hard to find, but 2GB cards should work just as well.
The internal memory is the memory built into the camera, not the memory you put in with a memory card. This internal memory is rather small. If it is completely full, it will stop your camera working even with an empty memory card.
Take the card out of the camera, and delete some of the photos on the internal memory before you put it back in.
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
1. Remove the memory card from your camera. 2. connect it to a computer using a compatible card reader or can directly connect to a laptop using its card reader present in the laptop. 3. Format the card from your computer and put the card back to your camera.

I can suggest that you first check that the card is not locked with the clip on the left side. Try using a card reader to format the memory card. There are two issues that this could be. The camera or the memory card and I can suggest that you work on a process of elimination by trying it with a different memory card. If it is the card, then take it back to the store of purchase and have them exchange it.
Hi there Check to make sure the cards write protect is
off, take the card out of the camera, face the card towards you, look
for a small white tab on
the left hand side of the card, to unlock it push the tab down, it will
be at the side of the card like this . Put it back in the camera and use the menu to format the card. If the format fails then its a possibility that you will need a new card.
