open the battery & power on

Unplug the netbook from the AC adapter and remove the battery. Replace the battery, charger, and power the netbook back on. This is called a hard reset.

Two things to try first before we go further with the diagnosis:
1. Try to power up the netbook with the external hard drive disconnected & see if it will work.
2. Try powering up the netbook from the AC adapter only with the battery removed.

try powering on with power adaptor connected, if works, battery needs charging, if not holding charge, battery needs replaced, if under warranty call DELL support to request onsite tech to repair.

Can you turn it on while it is plugged in, but with the battery removed? Try holding the power button for 10+ seconds.

If not, I would bring it to a tech for warranty repair.

Have you tried the reset hole? make sure there is nothing stuck in there that could be pressing on the button. When you press and hold the reset button the screen stays blank.

If you press the reset button does the unit turn on? Mine turns on when I press the reset button even after I turn the battery off then back on.
