If it is the one listed in the header 9005B first unplug the tool and then get a good screwdriver and you will find 2 brush caps that need to be removed and pull the brushes out, Be careful not to crack the brush caps and if you do think about replacing them. Let me know if you need more assistance.
I have a Makita 6556 grinder. The plate comes off the top back with a star head or hex head, I think. I got it off and now I'm lost. It is loaded with grease and I don't knbow where the brushers are located.
I can't find the 6556 listed. BUT if you see grease do you also see gears and if so you are on the wrong end of the tool. look back where the cord is going into the tool and you might find one screw holding the cover on. If you removed this screw where the cord is located and found grease you have a major problem with this grinder. if you can recheck the model or you can also use the site makitausa.com with the model number and download a schematic you will see what I am talking about. Let me know and I will check back
Ok, i did like you said and I found the brushes on the bottom where the cord comes in. My mistake, the model is a 5665cv. It looks like the brushes are held in my a black "band" if I'm looking in the right area. Thank you for all your help.
they are held in place by pushing the terminal of the shunt onto the field leads. there should be a small spring over them, gently lift the spring and put to one side so it doesn't fall into the tool and lift the brush out and remove the terminal by GENTLY pulling off the field connection. I don't know what you are talking about by the "black band"
I dont know what you mean by black bands, there is a spring that holds pressure on them and there is a "shunt" wire that connects to the field leads that must be disconnected to remove them. the band that you refer to might be an insulating sleeve on the wire.

Now do I just pull the bands off and change the brushes?
