You use the setting for the zig zag stitch, but set the stitch width to it's lowest setting for straight stitch. To do a basic straight stitch, you put the top dial on the black M and the bottom one on the 0. Stitch length is the dial to the right. To do zig zag you keep the dial on the M and put the bottom dial on 3, 4, or 5. One and two appear to be used when you use a twin needle - something a beginning sewer wouldn't be using. -------If you need to move needle to left side, set zig-zag width to control 5.Always make sure needle is in highest position when operating dials. The dial can be turned right or to left.Set dial at indicating point "a" according to stitch size required. For longer stitch turn to right, for shorter stitch turn dial to left. For normal sewing its between 2 and 3.--------- This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

Machine is stuck on reverse mode

Try this,Go back to straight stitch, zero your stitch length, zero your stitch width, turn your hand wheel towards you for few rounds then select a stitch length and see if the reverse lever will work normal after this. Otherwise get it fix by a local technician.

The reverse won't work on my singer 9018 sewing machine

STITCHING IN REVERSE

• To reinforce beginnings or ends of seams, push in

reverse lever

(1). Machine will straight stitch in

reverse for as long as you hold the lever in.

• For continuous reverse stitching, push lever in and

slide it to the left to lock. Unlock reverse lever by sliding

it back to the right and letting it return to its normal
position. if you need a manual let me know,,

When in the center needle position is selected, the needle is not centered, it is left of center. When the right needle position is selected, the needle sits only slightly to the right of center. How can...

Make sure machine is set for regular zigzag stitch and not a fancy zigzag stitch, and rotate it by hand at least two full revolutions in the normal direction of rotation to make sure it is settled in to the regular zigzag stitch. Now set the stitch width to maximum width and slowly rotate it by hand, watching the needle. Does the needle strike the top of the foot at the extreme left or right? (and this is the slotted zigzag foot, right?) If not, you are good to go. If the needle does hit the top of the foot squarely, do make sure that the foot is mounted correctly and change the needle, making sure it is the correct size and that it is inserted all the way and facing the right direction. It is somewhat unlikely that the left to right position of the needle bar needs adjusting.

Just inherited a kenmore ultra stitch 6 sewing machine (model 13402) and i think the top thread tension control knob might be broken. Can i get a fix it part from somewhere/ can it be fixed? Thank you so...

You can buy this part here
http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/tension-kenmore-mo-2052.aspx so I'd say it is certainly repairable.

However, installing it may be something you get a serviceperson to tackle, just depends on how easy it is to access the machine. etc. Another Fixya expert may have done this type of repair before but I haven't.

The other option is to take the machine to a local sewing machine repair person and get a quote to replace the tension dial and give the machine a service at the same time; this will mean you'll know the machine is working correctly, has been cleaned and lubricated and you'll be able to start fresh with it.

I have a Tacsew T20U73-1 straight stitch/ zig-zag machine and I am wondering how I go about making my machine go from zig-zag to straight stitch?

There has got to be a selector of some kind on the machine. Usually it will be marked with symbols indicating straight or zig-zag stitch. You may also try varying the width of the stitch. The wider the stitch, the more pronounced the zig-zag effect.

I'm new to sewing. It did not come with an operating guide and I find the stitch settings really confusing I would like to know how to set it to do a basic straight stitch for a simple dress pattern....

Look for the row of straight vertical lines. This is the straight stitch. There will also be a number dial for stitch length. Use a piece of scrap to find the length of stitch you want. Make sure you have the bottom feed lever or button activated. This will operate the textured plates that come up from underneath to move the material forward or reverse. Also, make sure you drop the presser foot lever before you start. Hold both threads, manually lower the needle to the first stitch starting point and use the pedal from there on. When you press the pedal, you can let go of the threads.
