Well first off is the compressor running? When you turn on the unit the fan will start. Turn the unit on to fan only. Then turn it into the cooling mode do you hear something else start? That would be the compressor. Remove the front panel so you can see the cooling coil (evaporator ) if it is freezing and has frost on just part of the coil top or bottom you have lost Freon or a system restriction.. One of the major problems with air cons is a very dirty or plugged condenser coil, which is the outside coil. If you have cotton wood trees in your area this is probably the problem.
Either the evaporator (front coil) is clogged with dirt, or you need some refrigerant. If refrigerant is very low, only one corner of the evaporator will get cold. So cold in fact that it will freeze. Then no more air can pass through that section of the evaporator, and the refrigeration will take place a little past that point. That keeps repeating itself until the whole evaporator is froze up. Look at the evaporator when you first turn on the air conditioner and "feel" the evaporator with your hands. The cooling should take place evenly from top to bottom, left to right.
The small line coming in from the outside unit should be warm to hot and the larger line should be cool and sweating with water forming on it. I am taking for granted that the unit was working if so it sounds as if the unit is low on freon. your inside coil should be sweating a lot from top to bottom if it is only cool or sweating on the bottom but less to nothing up top you are low on freon. When very low the unit will stop working just like a broken valve in the compressor. If it is just a little low it will not cool properly and at night it might even freeze the inside coil up.

You may try cleaning the evaporator filter,Also cleaning the outside coil or condensor,Simple green works good for cleaning coils and a garden hose.
Also cleaning the evaporator may help.
When unit is running properly the evaporator should feel cool and wet from top to bottom.
Last,the unit could be low on freon.
The unit,has it cooled the room before?Check the evaporator coil,the one inside the house,where the filter goes,put your hand on the coils gently,and place it all around and feel if the coil is cold,and is it cold all over,if it is not getting cold,all over the front of the coil,then it most likely needs freon.
Your AC unit is low on refrigerant. It should be recharged. be sure to keep the filter cleaned all the time as well. If this is an inexpensive unit, it may be cheaper just to get another one, since a lot of people would charge around $100. to charge it. hope this helps you, Rick
if you are only seeing frost on the top portion of the evap coil then you then it sounds as if the unit has sealed system problem (low freon or bad compressor). if the unit is less than 5 years old and made prior to nov '06 it should have a sealed system warranty. if the unit is out of warranty you may want to start looking at new refrigs. good luck peyton
This is only low freon. If the bottom coils freezes and frost over, you don't have enough freon to travel as liquid back to the compressor and boils right there and past this only cool gas .I'll advise you to get this fixed before you loose a compressor due to locking up by not cooling the compressor properly. Get in touch with an Ac man. this should only cost around $100:00
If the evaporator coil is only half coated with water, this means it is low on Freon. You need a repairman to fix the leak and add Freon, but this costs way over a hundred dollars.
A dehumidifier will often frost up if room temperatures are colder than about 65 degrees F. If your room temperature isn't this cold, airflow to the unit may be restricted or blocked entirely.
1) Be sure the unit is set far enough from the wall so that airflow isn't restricted.
2) Clean the evaporator coils. To do this, unplug the dehumidifier and take off the outer cover. Allow excess moisture to evaporate from the coils. Then, using a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner, remove all dust buildup. If necessary, cover the motor and electrical parts with plastic sheeting and spray with water.
