Sansa e260 not recognizing device/driver on Win XP2
Hi,
I attempted all of the above, including the "recovery mode" method and this has not worked. I also checked the settings of my player and it does not have the USB selection option, even though the instruction manual says it should (E200). Thus I am not even sure whether it is in MTP mode or otherwise. Please can you help me, as the store I bought it from is being very unhelpful as it works fine on their "Vistas".
Re: Sansa e260 not recognizing device/driver on Win XP2
I am having the same problem. The e250 does not have a place for selecting the USB mode. The instructions are for the 200. It is a shame that a company would put out such poor instructions and not have a web site that is simple enough to find a solution.
My computer also does not recognize the player when I plug it into a USB port. I have searched Sansa web site and all other blogs and have not found a solution. I did find when someone said that the e250 defaulted to MTP and you had to change to MSC. If you have found a solution let me know at [email protected] Thanks.

Sansa
Not Recognized: Try connecting it to the back of your computer or another computer the back straight
to the motherboard this should be USB 2.0 and see if it will recognize
it as sansa or Drive/removable drive. if it does then download the sansa
update software
and install it. Make sure you disconnect the sansa and connect it when
asked. This will update your sansas firmware and add the Usb Mode. Try
to connect it to your computer at home it should recognize.... link for
update software
(http://mp3support.sandisk.com/sansa/Installer/1082/SansaUpdaterInstall.exe)
download to a flash drive much easier. Make sure USB mode is MSC Recovery Mode may also allow your computer to recognize the sansa lock
your sansa hold in the rec key on the left at the same time push the
menu/power button this will take you to recovery mode then connect to
the computer Start the update software when finished disconnect.... Sync to upload songs to the sansa......Hope this works
Solution 1 RESETTING THE DEVICE
1. Press and hold the Power/Menu button for approximately 20 seconds. 2. Release the Power/Menu button. 3. Press the Power/Menu button again to turn on the player.
NOTE: Resetting will turn the player off while it is frozen.
When RESETTING the player did NOT help
Solution 2 GOING TO MSC or RECOVERY MODE and next UPDATE FIRMWARE
Method 2: Manual, downloading firmware from the Sansa Forum
For e200 series version 1 and 2 to the Forum e200 thread
For e200 series version Rhapsody to the Forum e200R thread
You might have a different operating system now - Windows Vista will not automatically recognize this player.
These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.
Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer.Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced. Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website. Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything. Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp If these fail, then: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version). You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer. -Tha Mp3 Doctor
Mine was a bit more FUBAR I guess. I have a Sansa e260. I had rockbox on it, went to switch back to the firmware. Uninstalled rockbox and on reboot... the e260 was refreshing the database and then came to a frozen green screen.
My e260 was already in MSC mode. I did the steps above but was still stuck.
The solution that worked was one posted by "Slaughter" on anythingbutipod.
The ultimate fix for all e2xx v1 problems - Format, enter recovery mode, downgrade firmware Link (you'll need to format the drive), reinstall newest firmware via newest Sansa Updater, reload tunes.
Substitute REC fo volume + in the following:

The volume + method listed below is the recovery method - you can somtimes substitute REC for volume +:

I agree with the above suggestion. Try setting the USB Mode under "Settings" on "MSC" on the Sansa. My computer would not recognize the e260 when the mode was set to "MTP"; works fine on "MSC".
