Yesterday I was taking pictures with my Canon 5d MarkII and Speedlite 580X. I control the flash from the camera enu but at some point the meanu was no longer accesible and I got a message that either the flash was off or was not compatible with the camera. However, the flash was on, batteries were fresh. I switched off flash and camera, waited a few minutes and then it worked. What causes this problem?

It sounds like the flash went to sleep. The normal time for this is 10 minutes. If you switch the camera over to slave mode, it should switch to 60 minutes.
I hope this helps! That's a great setup!

Canon 430ex ii seems to flicker rapidly sometimes before taking pictures

Yes it is. The system is simply measuring the flash to meter the exposure.

I keep keep an error 20 message with a canon 5d markii. It says to take out battery or turn camera on and off. This didn't work.

If the problem still happens after multiple resets contact the place you bought the camera from and see if you can get a replacement. If the camera is still under warranty canon will try and repair your camera and won't replace unless it is unable to be fixed.

I have recently shot some pictures with my canon 580 EX flash. pictures seemed to be a bit underexposed. My camera is a 50D pictures shot at ISO 200. The lens was a canon 17-40 F4 L. Is is possible that...

It all depends on the environment you're shooting in. When shooting a wedding reception for instance inside in the evening I will generally use ISO 800 and I quite often use FE Lock which is very handy. FE Lock will pre-flash the speedlite and meter the result based on the center focus point in your viewfinder (it doesn't matter if you have set another focus point it will always meter to the center one so make sure that is over your subject when you use it). To use FE Lock press the button near your thumb that has the * symbol with the center focus point over the subject. You can then re-frame the shot if required and take the picture. The camera will take the picture based on that flash setting and you should find that the shot is better exposed.

I purchased a Quantum Turbo sc battery pack charger and I am using a Canon 5D along with the Quantum Turbo sc battery charger. Batteries fully charged. Connections are correct and fitted tightly. All...

If you have the camera on continuous then it may be that the charging is not keeping up with the shutter. Check the recycle time on the flash and compare with the burst speed on the camera. The burst speed on the 5D is fairly rapid.

Canon 580ex II strobe issue

This depends on the mode you have selected on the flash gun. If you have Multi selected you will get the strobe effect. The strobe effect is all so present to help the flash set the correct exposure. It's not a problem with the flash or the camera. Spend some time reading through the flash gun manual. I have to admit it is not always clear. Also try Youtube for a video.

Can a canon speedlite 200e work with a nikon dslr ?

The Speedlite 200e was developed to work "exclusively with [Canon] EOS [film] cameras" according to the manual. It is not even compatible with Canon digital SLRs. Most modern (digital) SLRs control the strength of the flash to properly expose the pictures being captured.

The flash will probably fire when used with a Nikon DSLR but there is no guarantee that the images will be properly exposed. Also, the flash is designed to properly illuminate focal lengths of 35mm minimum. If you are using a wider lens (i.e., 24mm or 28mm) the edges of the image will not be adequately illuminated.
