This sounds like a single drive with multiple partitions that's working properly. Just because it doesn't identify the device by name doesn't mean its stopped working. Have you lost drive letters? Also, if it stopped working then you wouldn't be able to boot Windows unless you have multiple drives with some type of redundancy like a RAID array that's mirrored. : ) You can right click My Computer or just Computer IIRC in the later OSs and Manage to bring up your management console. Go to Hard Disk management and check what's active and if you have any drives/partitions that haven't been assigned a letter. This is the place to tell you more about your drives than you probably knew was possible. Good luck!

The hard disk It comes from an Acer notebook which died. When attached to a PC, The bios recognizes the disk and it is shown under device manager but it does not show under my computer.

It might need to be formatted before use, or it needs to be mounted under the diskmgmt.msc
Its a bit complicated issue hard to be done without remote access. If you want then we can take the remote access of your computer and try fixing it up for you. Reach us at hnetworking.com and don't worry it would be free. :-)

Acer extensa 5620 notebook dvd-cd rom doesn't read my dvd. i think i uninstalled driver. how can i find dvd writer driver for my notebook?

go to device manager under System Properties. Locate DVD/CD Drives, expand it, select your drive, right click and then left click on properties, select the General tab and check the state of the device IT SHOULD indicate the device is working properly, if so or if not, select the Driver tab unomstall the driver, reboot, see if Windows will reinstall the driver as it should recognize the device as a new drive. If not return to the device manager and reinstall the driver.

Can't get the software to detect the device

should be no compatibility problem.. not with xp... but you can check two different things... first check the "safely remove hardware" icon usually beside the time in the system tray. when you click on it once, it should say safely remove usb mass storage device drive *: (star representing drive letter), if no letter comes up then no drive letter is assigned and will have to go thru drive letter assignment.

the next thing would be in device manager in system properties... it should be recognized as usb mass storage device and disappear if you unplug your device. if not then the driver may need updating through microsoft

i would call Oly tech support so they can walk you thru the getting your device to work properly
