HP G71 340-US Notebook PC I'm having a display screen problem. After reading the forums, I've diagnosed my problem as a bad inverter or bad backlight. My symptoms are an extremely dim screen with images only present upon extreme light. I have since opened up my laptop with the goal of getting the SN of the Inverter and to potentially fix a loose connection. I cannot find the inverter. I know this is really obvious - most of them are under the LCD screen attached to the screen assembly. Removal of the LCD bezel should show it, but I see NO INVERTER. Is it possible that I don't have an inverter? If not, where is it in this model? The support manual does not help... Please please help. HP G71 340-US Notebook PC Mike

I guess you cant read, there is NO CCFL here.
its LED
leD runs off 2v not 100v like bulbs do.

see? if was CCFL some are not separate. (or other reading)
try to know that you may never find it
its so burred deep in the display.
why not read the manual on hp.com
it covers all parts there.
no service tag posted so , bad advice next

http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-G71-300-Notebook-PC-series/4004505/model/4035648/manuals

it's DIM
so did you turn up the brightness key first
and make sure it goes up and down? if not the software driver for the key and screen are wrong. dead, or messed up.
there must be no errors seen in device manager screen in CP
first.
then test the buttons brightness. they must RESPOND.

here is your screen spec
read that first
17.3” Diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)

see that LED there, that means NO CCLF lamps.
cold cathode fluorescent lamp
this are high voltage lamps thus the LV to HV DC inverter.
the led uses low voltage
the does not mean it can fail too., rare yes.
and good for 50,000 hours + most or more.
but can have damage and only 1/2 the lamps get power.
like impact damage to the screen, or wiring faults inside.

first test the brightness key to be sure it has some control
IT MUST

SOURCE: HP Pavilion dv1000 screen has gone extremely dim.

Two things: video card issue or video card settings. Try to go to the power options configuration of your portable system. Adjust the brightness. If changes does not take effect on your portable's display as well as the external monitor, it is a video card issue. The last option of resolution is to re-install the video driver. Click the link below and choose the exact model of your computer. Try to download the video driver for your computer. Make sure that you have the correct driver for your operating system. If re-installing the video driver still fails, unfortunately you need to have your video card replaced. Usually the video card comes embedded on the motherboard. That means you have to have your whole board replaced.

Compaq Presario CQ60-220 US, the monitor works but, there aresquiggly green lines along the right side that causes the image to show green.

Find out easily if the problem is with the Display Assembly, or the integrated graphics chipset on the motherboard.

[ A) When I refer to the Display Assembly, the reference will be to only the parts needed to repair. Not the entire display assembly.
Only the LCD screen, or screen Inverter, or Backlight.

B) The graphics used for a Compaq Presario CQ60-220US Notebook PC, is an Intel GMA X4500 graphics chipset.
It is Integrated Graphics.

The graphics chipset { GPU } is soldered directly to the motherboard, via a BGA surface mount.

1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU

2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_grid_array

3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X4500

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit ]

A) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, attach a VGA monitor to the VGA port on the Pavilion CQ60-220US Notebook PC.

(The VGA port is on the Left side as you face the laptop. Third port from the back. Color may be different, but this is an example of a VGA cable, and VGA port, { Connector },

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector )

You can use a VGA monitor, (CRT. Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen with a VGA cable.

Monitor plugged in, turn the monitor on. If a CRT model allow the monitor to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By default, the external monitor, (VGA monitor), should show what the internal monitor of the laptop, does.

IF not, press, and hold down on the Fn key. (Bottom row of Keyboard keys. Second key from left)
While holding down tap on the F4 key at the top of the Keyboard.

You may have to tap more than once.
There are at least three settings;
1) Notebook internal monitor ONLY
2) Notebook internal monitor, AND external monitor
3) External monitor ONLY.

IF, the external monitor shows exactly the same problem as the internal monitor of the laptop, the problem is the Graphics Chipset.

Unless you have access to a BGA rework machine, and the graphics chipset, it means replacement of the motherboard.
(Cost of replacing graphics chipset, versus motherboard replacement, a motherboard replacement may prove to be more cost effective )

If the graphics are fine on the external monitor, your problem lies within the Display Assembly.

Could be the LCD screen, or screen Inverter, or Backlight.

Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source.
The additional light source is the Backlight.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.

Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
A screen Inverter is used to convert the electricity, (Voltage and Hertz), of the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

90 PERCENT of the time the fault is the Inverter

An LCD screen is made up of layers. These layers are held in place by a screen Frame. Resembles a picture frame that comes apart, and is made of metal.

The Backlight is incorporated within the inside of the frame, and next to the layers making up the LCD screen. (Some models have more than one Backlight)

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/

For this reason, it is not a task for those who do not have the skills.
The LCD screen layers MUST be kept in the Exact same position, as they were from the factory.
One small misalignment, and your LCD screen is useless.

Due to this, and many who can easily perform replacing an LCD screen, the LCD screen, and Backlight are sold as one unit.

However, the screen Inverter is more easily replaced. It is located behind the Display Bezel, and attached at the bottom of the LCD screen area.

(The plastic front frame around, and in front of the LCD screen, is the Display Bezel. Resembles a thin plastic picture frame )

The screen Inverter is also MUCH more cheaper, than an LCD screen/Backlight replacement.

One example of a screen Inverter, for a Compaq Presario CQ60-220US Notebook PC,

http://www.battery-adapter.com/product_info.php/products_id/3763/vCQ50

Reasons I would recommend an average user to replace the screen Inverter, (If the display is okay on the external monitor),

A) Diagnosing the screen Inverter; Diagnosing whether it is bad.
Requires an Expensive multimeter that is Very sensitive.

B) 90 PERCENT of the time the fault is the Inverter

C) Cost
Assuming you do not have an expensive/sensitive multimeter, it is down to just being a parts changer, of a sort.

Due to the price, ratio of this part being the problem, and ease of replacing, this is a no brainer item to replace first.

To summarize;

A) IF, the display on the External monitor is the same as the Internal monitor of the laptop, a replacement motherboard is in the future.
(You yourself can replace. Read on)

B) IF, the display on the external monitor is good, then you may wish to replace the screen Inverter.

C) Replacing the screen Inverter does not repair the problem?
LCD screen with Backlight is next.

When I open my HP 6735s' lid, the resolution goes bad; it displays the colors as if set to a very low resolution. Lots of pink and blue and very fuzzy around the edges. The log-in screen is lime green....

You've probably got a bad inverter or inverter cables. They will mess up the color and display. I can't recall if those models have the inverter board separate from either the motherboard or LCD, but you'll probably have to get it taken in to a professional. Alternatively, you can hook up an external display and just use that for the time being.
Hope this helps, don't forget to rate.

My hp dv600 when powered up looks normal but if i give it a few seconds the screen goes black and wont come back i shined a light and i do have picture but no light maybe ballast?

alejandro,

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Very similar to the Fluorescent lamps, (Bulbs), used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

HP Pavilion dv6000z series Notebook PC, is a general series designation. The EXACT model number is on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.

The HP Pavilion dv6000z series of Notebook PC's used either an LED or CCFL type of Backlighting.
Depends on which model it is.

http://www.screentekinc.com/backlight-ccfl-led-explained.shtml

As stated in the above information a Backlight is mounted in the back, or on the side of the LCD screen.
The LCD screen is composed of layers. These layers are held together by a metal frame which emulates a picture frame. If the Backlight is a side unit it will be held in place next to the layers, and inside the metal frame.

[Which means the LCD screen's metal frame, (LCD Panel Frame), needs to be opened on one side.
This will leave the layers which compose the LCD screen loose. The layers MUST be held in the proper placing when changing out the Backlight. Not an easy job to accomplish]

An Inverter is used to change the power coming from the laptop, to be used by the LCD screen, and Backlight.
90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter.

The Inverter for the Pavilion dv6000z series of Notebook PC's is located inside the Display Assembly.

The Display Assembly is the
1) Display Enclosure Cover, (Plastic top of laptop),
2) LCD screen,
3) LCD Panel Frame, (Metal frame around LCD screen),
4) Display Bezel, (Thin plastic frame which surrounds the LCD screen in the front)
5) Camera Module
6) Inverter
7) Display Enclosure Cover Hinges (2)
8) Display Enclosure Cover Hinge Covers (2)
9) Wireless Antenna Transceivers and Antenna Cables
10) Microphone receivers and cables
11) Various mounting screws

[The Top Cover for a Pavilion dv6000z series Notebook PC is essentially the Palm Rest. The cover under the Keyboard]

With the Display Bezel removed the Inverter is located at the bottom.
(Display Assembly removed from laptop first)

Hp g5000 sreen does not light up as usal, i can see a the start up when i shine a torch at the sreen, what do i need to do to get working.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional source of light.
A Backlight is used as the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to the Fluorescent lighting used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

The LCD screen is a composite of layers, surrounded by a thin metal frame that resembles a picture frame.
To one side of the LCD screen layers, and under the frame is usually where the Backlight is mounted.
[Note* Two Backlights are used in some models]

Replacing a Backlight is more labor intensive than replacing an Inverter.
Due to this, and the cost, the LCD screen itself is replaced as a unit most of the time, when it comes to Backlight replacement.

Example of a replacement LCD screen for the HP G5000 series of Notebook PC's,

https://www.screentekinc.com/HP_G5000_Series--15.4-inch--1280x800-wxga-laptop-lcd-screen.shtml

[Note* Stating HP G5000 is just stating the model series. When buying replacement parts the EXACT Model Number should be used. This information is located on the bottom of the laptop, in a white Service Tag.

When replacing an LCD screen, the model number of the replacement LCD screen should be matched to the existing LCD screen's Model Number.
Inverters and LCD screens are matched together. Make sure you get the correct part]

An Inverter is used to provide power from the laptop to the LCD screen, and to the Backlight.

Note* 90 Percent of the time the problem is a bad Inverter.

Example of an Inverter for an HP G5000 series notebook PC,

http://www.zlectronic.com/product/INVERTER-FOR-HP-DAC-07B035-DAC-09B017-DV5000-G5000.html

The LCD screen, Top Cover, Display Bezel, Inverter, Backlight, and various screws, make up the Display Assembly.
The Display Bezel made of plastic surrounding the LCD screen, and in front of the LCD screen is removable.
Behind it is easy access to the Inverter.

The Inverter is approximately 4 inches long, and the width of a No.1 pencil.
Usually located at the bottom of the LCD screen, and right behind the Bezel.

This article shows replacing an Inverter and LCD screen on a Compaq Presario v2000 series Notebook PC,

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-lcd-screen-inverter-compaq-presario-v2000-laptop/

This pictorial guide is not for the HP G5000 series Notebook PC, but the models are very similar when it comes to Inverter replacement.
The above link is to show you what is involved.

The display on my HP Pavillion dv1000 is extremely dim and I can't get the screen to lighten so I can read it. I have done a hard reset and replaced the power inverter. It blink on once, but that was the...

1. Test using an external monitor. If it works, then either the screen bulb or the inverter board might be defective.
2. Test the inverter. Easiest way to do it if you have a good screen with a good bulb. Connect the good screen to the inverter board & test it. If it lights up, then the inverter board is good. If it did not, then the inverter board is bad & needs to be replaced.
3. If the inverter board is good, then we are left with the possibility that the screen bulb is bad. To fix this, we will need to replace the LCD screen.

Pinky red tinge horizontal lines near the taskbar in display HP Pavilion dv4

sounds like your power inverter is going bad. replace power inverter and see how that works. Other issue if not solved is probably lcd screen. Inverter's can be found cheaper used if you use the serial number on your old inverter for searching, seeing as how inverters are often used on many different of machines. FYI.

I have a dv 1000 HP & there is no screen but it continues to work with a seperate screen attached

Hi:
If your laptop works on a seperate screen, but not the laptop screen, you have either a bad LCD, or bad LCD inverter board. The inverter boards are less than $20, and mounted inside the lid, at the bottom of the display. LCD panels are about $100.

LCD goes dim within 1-2 minutes

You could have a bad "inverter" or flourescent backlight tube, or a problem in your power supply. The only way to isolate the problem is to check each component in sequence. If your hard disk and DVD / CD drive are still working when your screen goes dark, then I'd say it's the "inverter". You'll have to take it to a repair shop.
