Sounds like the water pump is cavitating . Replace water pump. Check coolant level also. Open the bleeder valve usually located on thermostat housing to remove air from system. close valve when coolant is present while filling. close radiator cap and top off recovery bottle to correct level. These engines are prone to overheating, do not let temp gauge get in the red.
check your radiator level, as stupid as it sounds my 01 celica didn't have heat for 2 years. I was thinking it was the heat flap or something because when I drove the heat would start working and when I stopped it would stop working. Yesterday the car overheated so I checked the antifreeze and added about half a gallon. The car stopped overheating and as a side result the heater started working normally again. I did head slap and went on with life. Most vehicles have the heater core low to the floor but in the celica it is actually higher than the motor which means if fluid is at all low it won't work as it turns out.
check blower motor.. give it a tap when you start the vehicle and turn on the heat.. if it come on then you would have to replace the blower motor..if it does not check for fuse..
the heater stops working then as you are driving the heater might start working. it comes on when it wants to it was working all summer it seems to stop working in the winter.when it strts getting cold outside that is when it starts acting up.
Just got my car back from the garage for this exact problem. It started about 3 months ago. The airbag light would go on for no reason. I did notice when this would happen my power windows would not work. All of a sudden it would come back on and everything would be fine. When I took it in the first time the garage coulnt find anything wrong. Then it got cold. Three days ago as I was driving I adjusted my steering wheel and the air bag light came on. Only this time I had my heater on and the heater went off and once again the windows would not work. I moved my steering wheel again and the light went off, the heater came back on and the windows worked again. All of a sudden the airbag light came on and this time it stayed on. Now I had no heat. I took it in and they said for some reason the wires in the steering wheel were being pinched and shorting and this short was had also caused the ignition switch to go bad, which also had to be replaced for the second time in a year. I got my car back, but you can be assured I will not be adjusting the steering wheel. Good Luck.
