SOURCE: Computer stays on but display will not stay on

OK, let's see whether we can solve the problem.
You see the first screen. Do you see the windows starting screen for a few seconds? (The light blue screen if you are having XP). If you see a glimpse of this screen the problem is with your VGA settings, not hardware.
Here is how to correct it.
Start the computer and, as BIOS screen is about to close, press F8 button several times. You will see the Boot menu. From there select 'Enable VGA mode' - if you have XP - or 'Enable low-resolution video (640×480)' - if you have Windows 7.
See whether Windows screen appears. The icons might appear larger than usual.
Right-click on the desktop and set the resolution to 1024 x 768. (You can later change it to a value you prefer). You may also set Screen refresh rate to a lower value like 60, but this is optional.
Restart the computer and check whether your problem is solved. And if it is, consider voting my solution.
Good luck! And thanks for using FixYa!

SOURCE: motherboard won't boot past cmos

you are pretty much right it may be a corrupt bios, however before we come to a conclusion try isolating both Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm 80gig ide hard drive and optical drive only and then see if it at least goes past the bios screen, if yes then the bios is ok and just needs to be resetted to defaults. dont expect it to load windows even if it goes past bios check as hard disk which helps to boot to windows would be removed. also in case if you are using 2 ram slots try connecting only 1 ram chip in 1 slot and then see if it goes past the bios test screen. do reply with results. Good luck.

Testimonial: "Based on Prathamesh's diagnosis I'm going to flash the motherboard with a latter version of its firmware."

Problem with Computer

Did you reset your BIOS ? Try reset your bios. remove the BIOS battery(RTC battery) and press the power button after disconnecting from wall socket. Short the jumper somewhere near to the BIOS chip. A user manual is helpful. If you can't find the jumper, simply short the two terminals inside theBIOS battery holder. That is two golden or steel coloured thin sheet like. Put back the battery after an hour and start the system. Tap the DEL button to enter into BIOS settings and change date and time first then boot device order(boot device priority) save and exit. See what is happening. If it solves the issue you have studied another troubleshooting tip. Hope this helps!!!

I need step by step instructions on how to disable my onboard video without being able to see the screen for example "hit f2 to go into bios press the left arrow 3 times hit enter press down 2 times...

Hi,

Because I don't know the BIOS version I can't walk you through the steps of disabling the on-board video. However you could try resetting the CMOS.

Remove the power cord from the back of the machine and install your new video card in the slot. Look for the CMOS battery which looks like this >>>
leecom72_5.jpg

Remove this battery for 20 minutes while periodically pressing the on/off button to de-spell any residual power from the motherboard.
After 20 minutes is up put the battery back in and plug in the power cord. Start the computer and it should now auto detect the video card and you should see info on the screen.
Remember that you will have to set the date and time as these are reset.

Regards.

Everything runs, power supply turns everything on but nothing on screen, frustrated, where are those jumpers? I have SATA setup. I switched motherboards this particular model does not run core 2 quad so...

P5N32? that is a blast from the past. Your pins are located next to the bios of the motherboard and are labeled. You need to make sure the VGA settings are correct (bios recovery should take care of that on mobo I don't think there are pin/jumper settings) on board and monitor.

Aspire m-5620 desktop shut down wont power up

Try opening the computers case and resetting the BIOS Battery
Now BEFORE you open the computer do the following:-
(1 Unplug the computer from ALL conections (2 Touch the metal case on the computer to get rid of any static electricity. Static + Computer = Dead Computer so be sure not 2 have static electricity when operating on computer.
Now we may begin!
Now once you open your computer find some thing called the BIOS Battery. Now it's a CR2032 Battery which is the type people use in tamagotchis and pocket LED lights. It will be silver and round and about the size of a camera lens. Now find a clip or something holding it in place. Push that clip and the battery will pop out. AVoid touching the motherboard witch is the big board that the BIOS Battery is on. It wont damage anything by touching it by just try not to.
Now wait about an hour.
Once youve waited around an hour put the BIOS Battery back in. Switch on your computer and hey presto we have bootup. Now your computer will say something like press F2 to setup BIOS or Press Escape to run deafult settings. Just stick with the deafult settings.

No post to bios on new pc build

FIRST....... Make sure you remove the stock thermal compund (pasty/sticky stuff) from the bottom of the heat sink as well as from the top of the cpu.........

Second APPLY some ARCTIC SILVER 5 compound-ust a thin coat of it over the top of the cpu......use an old credit card.....keep it ff the sides and bottom though......it's important not to use too much........one little tube will do anywhere from 3 to 5 CPUs...!!!
(stock thermal paste/thermal compunds......**** BADLY and can cause a cpu to burn up)

reseat (properly) the cpu and carefull

Now make sure you're 24 pin or 20+4Pin Power connectors are connected, as well as your fans..........disconnect all your SATA Devices, and remove everything but the video card , CPU, and fans.......Now it should post (if all your jumpers are set correctly...........

IF it still doesn't post, remove the video card and reboot.

If it doesn't beep at all......... You have one of 2 things.........A DEAD CPU, or a DEAD MOBO

Similar problem after ASUS relacement

Your first solution would probably be to find your CMOS jumper and reset the BIOS. Remove excess peripherals, like modem cards and the like. Make sure only the bare essentials are connected. As a last resort, pull all of the RAM and see if it beeps at you - if you don't get a long POST code, then the board is probably toast. I'd take a look at that power supply if that's the case.

Pc wont boot

Have you recently experienced a power surge or had an electrical (thunder) storm in your area? Potentially your motherboard and/or processor could be toast since the fan running and CD Rom drive opening will continue to function because they receive power separately from the motherboard via the power supply. If you have access to a different compatible processor, you could try to install it in the motherboard to rule out a motherboard failure, otherwise you're looking for a new motherboard.

System not on

You'll probably need to reset the bios to it's defaults. This should be done with the computer off and the power cord unplugged. You can either look in the motherboard manual and find the reset pins to short or easier still...Look on the motherboard and find the bios battery. It will probably be a flat battery that looks like something out of a calculator. Pull the batter out and wait a few minutes and put it back in. After you power up, the computer should boot directly into the setup, if not enter the bios setup on post-up and restore the settings to what you normally used if it wasn't the default settings.

P4i65G - brand new want start.

Try getting a slower cpu, I have a 3.0Ghz P4 with 512mb of ram and it works great, I emailed them about upgrading ram and they said: "Upgrading the memory would not affect the Video card, unless the memory is not compatible with the motherboard, then the computer might not turn on at all."
