SOURCE: Subtitles are too low and can't be read...can I

Yes you can. It is called the aspect ratio. You will find it on the menu of your DVD Player. Goto the menu without a disk in the player.
You can also change the aspect ratio on some TV's to match that of the player. See your TV menu or user manual.

SOURCE: on my samsung dvd

You cannot defeat the auto subtitles permanently. Every time you turn on the player it will automatically enable subtitles even if you had disabled it the last time you used it. Can be irritating but the player has very good quality picture !! so you can forgive them of this.

How do I get closed captioning?

According to the Samsung support website there is an option in the menu which is called "caption" which can be selected off or on.

This is a link to a copy of the manual.

Samsung UN65F6300AF manual

In the manual it says to select the onscreen menu and then ...

Subtitles

Screen Menu > Broadcasting > Caption Try Now

View subtitles along with subtitle-enabled digital and analog broadcasts.

Show Subtitles

Screen Menu > Broadcasting > Caption > Caption Try Now

Show subtitles. Subtitles will be displayed when you choose a broadcast that supports subtitles.
"" DVD Subtitles are only available when connected to an external input connector.

Trying to watch a foreign film with subtitles (DVD). The subtitles are getting cut off at the bottom of the screen. TV is on full screen format (not Zoom). We tried moving the picture up the screen, but...

First, try the "Aspect Ratio" button on the remote. If none of the settings remedy the problem, try accessing the menu of the DVD player to ensure that it is set to 16:9 aspect output.

Let me know if neither of these help.

You should have a 'Subtitles' button at the bottom of the remote control. Press it during the movie and you can navigate through languages by pressing the right or left arrow buttons on the remote control.

Can't turn on closed captioning and subtitles

If it's only with some DVDs, then the problem likely lies in the DVD itself not containing any subtitles or CC.
