I need a owners manual for my reddy heater 170t, how can I find one?

I think the actual model number for this is RL170AT

This is a DESA manual but the same exact model except for the name:
http://assets.phpdistribution.com/manuals/Manuals_Page/113170-01E.pdf

Over the years DESA INTERNATIONAL has manufactured kerosene heaters with the following brand names and Reddy Parts stocks parts for them all:
  • dayton%203e218cred.gifReddy
  • Master
  • Koehring
  • Knipco
  • Amoco
  • John Deere
  • Dayton
  • Queen Bee
  • Co-op
  • and many private label brands

I have an R50 Reddy heater. It will start and run and heat for about 4 mins, then it shuts down. Then I push the reset button and it will run approx. 5 soconds then shut down. What do I do and will it be...

If the heater runs good & smells good while its running, but shuts down for no apparent reason, then most likely, you have either a bad Safety Control HA3003 (reset) or a bad photocell HA3019.

But, don't rule out simple problems like:
(any of the following can cause a flameout condition, in which case the photocell will shut the unit down. This is where trouble shooting comes into effect).
  1. loss of ground at the Ignition Control (transformer)- not screwed down good
  2. restricted fuel fulter
  3. restricted or worn nozzle
  4. air pump pressure not set to specs

Does it have a themostat?

The R50 has no thermostat.

The two knobs... are they screws? In the round black plastic end cover? If so, do NOT adjust because they are not a thermostat, instead, this is the heartbeat of the fuel system. The air pump pumps fuel to the nozzle and atomizes the fuel. If you have adjusted the one with a hole in it you will need to reset the pump pressure. It's easy!

I have a reddy heater model r 50.. It ran for an hour, then shut off, I f I reset it, runs for 15 min or so shuts off... its old and borrowed, I think i might have a thermostat on it and just shuts off...

The R50 does not have a thermostat.

The 2 knobs that you mention- are they the screws in the black plastic end cover?

If so, these are the heartbeat of the fuel system and do not adjust. They adjust the air pump pressure which puts fuel in the nozzle and atomizes it. The pump pressure is critical. If the pressure is not correct the heater will shut down.

If you have adjusted the screw with a hole in it you will need to reset the pump pressure to specs. It's easy. http://reddyparts.com/photocell_test_sp.htm

Now, if you have not adjusted the pump, then you might want to check the tank for water.
