I would like step by step instructions in plain english, to assist with "securing" my wireless Belkin Network" When I click the icon to see which routers are in my range...they all say SECURE except for mine. Neither myself or my husband are computer savy and I've done well so far, yet this last step seems to be quite important.

How do i protect my unsecured home wi-fi network? I have a Belkin router IP address 192.168.2.1.

To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

Belkin Wireless 5-Port Hub (F5L009) Problem

If you set the allowed IP address in the security section of the router then you must fix your computer IP to 192.168.1.101 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 the default gateway should still be 192.168.1.1 and when you get in delete the security locking out all but the one address. Good Luck

Just got a belkin g wireless can get internet through it on desk top but not the laptop the laptop says its connected to the belkin but not the internet

First, is the Belkin handing out DHCP addresses? If so, do you know what the address is and is your laptop set to obtain everything automatically for the wireless connection?

on the laptop, can you go to a command prompt and type tracert 74.125.79.83 ? see where the hops stop and if it is the Belkin's IP address, then something in the Belkin is not setup to route outbound from wireless clients.

Hope this helps

Configuration of Belkin Wireless Router F5D6231

Whoops, found it. http://cache-www.belkin.com/support/dl/f5d6231-4_manual.pdf

If I were setting this up for myself or a customer, I'd keep the Airtel IP's and let it be the DHCP server. To do this, you pick a fixed IP address for the Belkin, something like 192.168.1.251. Log into the Belkin and change the LAN IP address to that and turn off DHCP. Those instructions start on pdf page 34.

Now, plug one of the 4 ports into the Airtel, and from a computer connected to the network type in 192.168.1.251 in Internet Explorer. It should get you to the Belkin where you finish setting it up for wireless security and password from page 38.

You won't use the WAN port.

Network key for router.

In onder to obtain this information you need a computer that has internet connection through the router, if you have a main computer that is wired through the router then use that computer if not try to hardwire the laptop to the router(plug it to any of the number ports that say ethernet/lan). Access the setup page of the router by typing 192.168.2.1(deafult IP address of the router) on the address bar of your browser(i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari), type admin for the username and leave the password blank. Go to the Wireless Settings/Configuration tab of the router and verify the security mode(WEP or WPA)

I am trying to secure my belkin wireless G router

WEP/WPA is an encryption you can enable on your wireless router to keep others off your wireless network as well as secure communications between users and the wireless side of the router.

A copy of the manual can usually be downloaded from the manufacturers website. Looking at the bottom of the router will give you model number, serial number, and version information you'll need to get the manual.

Each router is a bit different then the next, most come with a cd that will help you setup security. But all of them I have seen so far have web interfaces you can access by typing in the 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 ip address in your address bar.

Most default logins are admin/admin or admin with no password
