I have a sony cyber-shot dsc-s700 camera that i purchased - new - 5 months ago. it has worked OKAY since i got it but it just recently started displaying white lines across the pictures i take. what is this ? how can it be fixed ?

Try these procedures.

It is problem of lens mechanism and only solution is to replace lens assembly. Local camera repair shop will help you to replace lens assembly because it is not user level repair.

Well it seems your problem is the cable. Looking at what you said, you've tried couple of cables and still did not work. I would ask you to either check if the connection on the camera is okay.

Alternatively you can purchase a card reader, they are like $12 to $25 depends on brand and that would solve your problem. I never like the idea of connecting my camera via the cable for the said reason.

To solve format error, go to camera Menu and select Format and press OK. This will format and delete all data on memory stick.

As you said, its 4 months old and assumed under warranty cover. Contact Sony Service Center for repair because if you try yourself, will void warranty.
