Don't know the solution....but am having the same exact problem! LCD screen just showing static-like jumpy lines. Must be a wire connection I guess but when put in docking station and turned on, computer still doesn't see it as can't access the menu on lcd screen -- can't see it! Help! Just, hopefully, recorded my 19 mth old son's first time in the snow!

I have the same problem with my dcra-c171 but am able to download the images from the camcorder. The lcd menus are still operative but I just see the gray static.
    Here's what I do:
    1) connect camcorder to your computer like usual on mine it's turn both on, connect usb and a message pops up on the camcorder display, which I can't read now.
    2) touch lcd screen where the option for computer is supposed to be (on mine it's the upper left quadrant but check your manual if they show a sample menu)
    3) computer connects to the camcorder and you can download as usual

I'll be downloading everything and trying a hard reset unless I can find anything else out. I'm afraid the lcd is just gone. How old is yours? mine is 2 yrs old but gets a lot of use.

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-SR82. The station has gone bad. I cannot locate one. Any help with this

It is actually a 'Handycam Station' - it is a docking station for charging the battery. Your best bet is to try Ebay.

Sony analogue Hi8 Handycam as a security camera

Hi!

You need to have things with you before you can proceed to use it as a security camera. As your's is a analog camera we will require a video capture card connected with your pc/laptop.

After you have one connect that with your pc and pTo get the video into your computer, you need a analogue to digital video capture card....otherwise, connect the camcorder to a CD or DVD player/recorder, and use the CD/DVD as a source for your video editing... Otherwise, you need a later model of SONY "Digital 8" digital camcorder which plays analogue tape, and with this your computer can capture the video via firewire

For details on how to record using a software and video capture card please look at this link---

How to save videos from sony handycam to my home pc

If I understand the user guide correctly, you can set the capture format in Preferences and have the captured video saved as MPEG1, there may be other options depending on what that version offers. If this is the only software you have to edit video, you must capture it first to have it saved to a folder of your choosing (usually set up in preferences). After that you should be able to use Windows Media Player or Quicktime to play back the file you captured. You can convert the MPEG1 files to another format if you want by using free software such as AVS Video Converter or other software.

Computer mode

hi follow this steps: Make sure that you have installed the USB driver for the handycam. You can download the drivers from this link: Sony Asia Pacific Support Website--Download Page for HC40E USB Driver for Windows. Connect the handycam to the AC adaptor (the same as putting it on charge). Set the handycam to USB stream mode. (Press P-menu, press MENU, Press EDIT/PLAY, Press USB MODE, Press USB Stream.) Set the tape at the point from where you want to start capturing in PC. Connect the handycam and the PC with the USB cable. (USB-Mode appears on the handycam LCD / viewfinder.) Start Windows Movie Maker. Click on the 'Capture..' link to start the wizard. Select the Sony Digital Imaging Device. Click Next. Specify the file name and path for the capture video. Click Next. Select the desired capture format and Click Next. (Leave it to recommended setting if you are not sure.) The dialog box now displays the Start Capture and End Capture buttons on the left and preview window on the right. Play the tape on the handycam. The video from handycam should appear in the preview window of WMM. Click the Start Capture button to start capturing the video. Click End Capture to pause or stop recording. Click the Finish button. The .wmv file will be saved in the path specified in step 7.
