Hi--
We have a Zebra S500 printer and the Printer/Ribbon light continues to flash--so we can't print to it. We've re-threaded both the paper and the ribbon with still no luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

1. Reset the printer - to return the printer configuration to factory default values, pressFEED and PAUSE at the same time while turning the power On (l). 2. Download this Maintenance Manual for Zebra S600 and follow the troubleshooting steps from page # 66.(table 3-2) Printer stops, pause and paper/ribbon LEDs both on / Printer stops, pause LED on and paper/ribbon LED flashing. 3.Uninstall / Re-install the zebra printer driver .Use this revouninstaller to remove the driverClick here to download the driver for Zebra S600 .
Make sure that both ribbon and media paths are clean (no glue, or sticked labels). Make shure the ribon and the media are corect installed on their paths.
I am unsure if this one is a ribbor printer or a thermal......
if thermal the paper might be too old or the print head is going bad. if ribbon try replacing the ribbon, or you have a bad batch of ribbons.
The red light means out of paper or ink ribbon. Some people chose not to use the ink ribbon and get thermal direct paper which requires no ink ribbon but The red light means out of paper or ink ribbon. Some people chose not to use the ink ribbon and get thermal direct paper which requires no ink ribbon but the printer has to be told by the driver not to expect ribbon or the red light will come on. Also not having the correct paper height set in the driver will make the red light come on as well so check the advanced tab in the properties of the driver then click printing defaults. In the ZDesigner driver height and width are entered there. In the zebra universal, its the same path but one extra click. Click paper output and enter the size.

Question, when the printer prints is there an image of the data on the ribbon when it spools onto the ribbon takeup spool? If so, the ribbon may be installed backwards. I'm sure you know what you are doing but one must check even the smallest detail when trying to solve these strange problems. If the ribbon is installed correctly and there is no image of the data on the ribbon you may be dealing with a bad printhead and the printhead needs to be replaced.
The factory default setting for the S600 is thermal transfer (ribbon). depending on your OS there is a command that can be echoed to the printer to change the setting to direct transfer (non ribbon). It sounds like your printer thinks is should use a ribbon and in fact you are not using a ribbon. Here is the procedure I use to get the ribbon motor to turn on:
1. start with the printer turned off.
2. open the printhead, retract the ribbon completely onto the supply spool. leave the printhead open.
3. Press and hold the top three buttons (PAUSE, FEED and CANCEL) while turning on the printer. When the botom couple lights turn off release the buttons.
4. When you are left with the power light on and the printhead light blinking reinstall the ribbon and close the printhead.
The printer will autoclaibrate and run a sensor test.
Once complete the take up motor should have turned on and you should be able to use thermal transfer labels and a ribbon.
