It is known problem of ccd imager chip failure in your Canon camera, replace ccd imager chip by local camera repair shop to get correct live image in camera mode. Thanks.

I contacted Canon and they told me that there was a recall on the camera for this problem. They are sending a label so that I can send it back to them to be repaired.

You have a loose solder connection or two. If I knew the model number of the set, I could be more specific. I would expect the repair would run about a hundred dollars, so make sure the picture quality is great before going to the expense.
It sure sounds like the CCD is acting hinky on you from time to time. Check out http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html and call the 800 number in the advisory for better advice from Nikon repair people. This problem seems to be manifesting itself with lots of different kinds of screen displays. Mine just went black. Nikon was very good about making the free repair - all I paid was the cost of sending the camera to them. Don't send your battery, memory card, camera strap or lens cover. All they need is the camera body.
No its not a cheap repair Renee, please don't invest your hard earned money into an old 32". If you can buy a newer LCD or Plasma set. LCD's are cheaper and have the smaller sizes that you may want.
