It's called a variable resistor and is on the fan blower box.

Blower is the name we use. We use the word fan for the one by the radiator.

I have a 1988 735i and smoke came out the inside vents recently.....fan barely works. Any suggestions??

If it smells sweet -it is coolant

If it just was brief & white is was refrigerant

If the blower works it is not a fuse

The blower motor may be old & worn out & need
replacing & you may have a leaking heater core

Good Luck under the dash

Look at some You Tube Video on R&R of
a heater core

No air flow for heat and A/C

It would be unlikely that a heater core - a/c blower would be running or supposed to run a 30amp fuse, a 10 amp would be sufficient for that curcuit, or it could overheat the wiring in a fault.

Trace the wiring back, check for power from the fuse and trace it down to the fan, to check the fan run power into it and see if it operates.

Check the fan resistor.

Fan motor on heater has stopped when I switch between the settings ( defrost to upper & lower heat) I hear the gates moving but the fan won't come on ( no heat ) it's very cold please any sugestions...

first check the heater fuse...then you want to unplug the fan motor lead and run it straight to the battery...if it works then you will need to check the resistor assembly..it is located on the heater housing right near the fan..it controls the different speeds for the fan and usually has 4-6 wires coming off it. If these don't fix the problem...try looking in the fuse/relay box both in the cab and under hood to see if you have a relay for the heater fan...as it may be defective

Heat & AC blower (fan) does not come on. Just

if it worked on some settings and not on others then the blower motor resister has gone bad. its mounted on the heater box near the fan about half way up the heater box. they are cheap and easy to change. give that a try first
