Hi.. E5 means the cartridge is not installed or the cartridge is not recognized. Here are some possible solutions that will work on your printer.
First step
1. Remove the cartridge and clean the copper surface contact by a moistened cloth. Then return back the cartridge properly, you will hear a snapping sound to tell you its properly seated.
Reset the Printer to clear the error. This is done after refilling the cartridge with ink.
1. Disconnect the printer's power outlet.
2. Press and Hold Power button while connecting the power outlet back.
3. While holding the Power button, Press the Reset button twice (red circle with inverted triangle)
4. Release the power button.. wait until the printer shown number 0
5. Press + to change the value from 0 to 1.
6. when this value is 1, press the color button; this will light up two leds, one is for plain paper and the another for photo paper . at this point is feed the printer with paper.
7. Press
the Power button
8. Press the Color button
9. Press the Reset button. The canon will print some stripped lines and some numbers and letters (all
black if colored ink is empty). When you print this sheet the value in the display returns to zero.
10. Open the printer cover (not the scanner cover) and remove the cartridges.
11. With the printer stll open, disconnect the power outlet.
12. Close the lid
13. Re-connect the printer to the power outlet and turn on the printer.
14. Open the lid, return the cartridge and wait for the printer until it fully initialize.
Try printing again.
IF another error appears, do this reset.
1. While the errors appear in your printer...Press and Hold the Reset button (red circle with inverted triangle) and wait until it self restart.
2. Release the Reset button when the printer restart.
Take note of this as you will use this everytime you refill the canon cartridge.
