Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies

Projection Screen Tip #2

Make sure that the screen is the correct aspect ratio for the most commonly used projection device. For instance, a video projector should be in 4:3 or 16:9 modes, depending on its native aspect ratio. The screen should match the aspect ratio that is used most often. This will allow the entire screen-viewing area to be filled by the projected image.

Thinking about purchasing the Shift3 Lightblast Entertainment Projector. I know that this system can project video games and movies but can it also project TV programs such as football, basketball games, etc as well? I have a Samsung 22' LCD flat screen TV I will be using.. Thank-you.

Perhaps you meant can it project sports *well*. Of course it can display any standard signal. If it can display TV and video games, it can display sports. However, the resolution and aspect ratio of the device is standard definition. So it is 4:3 and equivalent to VHS tape. If you have an HDTV at home and are expecting to be able to see the small print on the score graphics, forget it. But for the price, it does a great job of projecting a picture.

Presentation mode is off...

I'm going to guess that you have a wide screen Dell laptop with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a default resolution of 1280X800. The wide screen is great BUT most presentation grade projectors do not have a native (pixel for pixel) 16:10 mode. Instead they still prefer a display input with a 4:3 aspect ratio like your old square CRT or standard definition TV. Why do they prefer a 4:3 input? Mainly because Powerpoint prefers to display a slideshow in a 4:3 mode. Because of this Dell, in their infinite wisdom, created the 'presentation mode' utility in an attempt to automatically convert the VGA output of your laptop from 16:10 to 4:3 on the fly. In my experience this is an annoyance at best and at worst can seriously impact the size and quality of the projected image.

The best thing you can do when you connect to a projector is ignore the presentation mode alert and manually set your laptop's resolution to 1024X768 for an XGA rated projector or 800X600 for an SVGA rated projector. This will cause your desktop to look stretched on your laptop but will give you by far the best projection image.

aspect ratio problem

The unit is on 16:9 because you use a video ( composite ) input.

Go into your Menu and where you see Aspect Ratio 16:9 press the right arrow key to switch it over to 4:3
