If you can hear the startup music, try plugging the laptop into a regular monitor and press FN+F5 to view your operating system. This will mean that your backlight has blown and you need to replace the screen. If not, oh boy, it could mean that your motherboard may have taken a dive. Before you trash it replace the meory chips, just in case they have become defective.

Toshiba satellitep205d-s7438 won't boot up

You need to be more specific and tell what happens when you plug in the power cord and press the power button. There are a number of reason why a computer will not boot, but if you tell what's going on someone can help you.

Computers don't boot for basically the following reasons, 1) the power supply is bad. That means when you plug it in you don't see any lights, and when you press the power button nothing happens, you hear no fans, no beeps, no blinking lights, no hard drive spinning, no cd drive clicking and nothing appears on the lcd screen.

2) A motherboard issue, usually when this happens you will either see blinking lights or hear beeps. Those blinking lights and beeps are codes that tell the technician what is really going on.

3) Static Buildup - try removing the battery and the power cord then Press and Hold the Power Button for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds put the power cord back in (leave the battery out) and Press the Power Button. If it boots up you had static buildup and can replace the battery, count your blessings and Thank The Lord cuz a dishonest repairman would have told you he had to replace the motherboard for $300

had the same problem, thought my motherboard was dead as I had this issue once before and the shop the replaced the first motherboard with a bad power connention replaced the motherboard
somewhere I read that a solution was to unplug the power and remove the battery, then hold the power on button down for 30 seconds
put the power back on and try to start
well the first attempt failed but I thought, try one more time, make sure it's at least 30 seconds and my toshiba came back to life -
worth a try

Toshiba satellite m35x-s114 boots to the toshiba screen then doesn't do anything else. Even with the f2 or f12 option nothing happens. I hear the fan (I think it is the fan) then no sound at all. I have to...

Try getting to the bios screen, if you can get to the bios screen then I would imagine the hard drive has failed. If it is hanging up at the toshiba splash screen and not allowing BIOS access, then I would lean toward a motherboard failure. Are you attempting a boot from the windows disc?, is that why you are trying F12? I have seen my share of these Toshiba M35's just give the Toshiba splash screen when there has been a motherboard issue. Changing out the main board will fix this particular problem. I had not found another solution for it.

Computer does start up

Does it not seem to get power? This is a common issue with the S149. If you have a charged extra battery or one from a similar Toshiba laptop like the S311 you can see if it starts with a charged battery. If it does the problem is likely the soldered connection on the motherboard for the power cord. This commonly breaks and causes the laptop to not run off the power cord and not charge the battery, but it will run from a charged battery. If this is the case you will need to resolder the power connector to the motherboard. The laptop must be disassembled to make the repair. If you do not have the tools, knowledge or experience to do this or the solder job then you will need to locate a technician that can.

Remove the 1 gig chip. Pull you battery out and unplug the laptop. Hold the power button in for 10 seconds. Put the battery back in and plug the laptop back in again and try booting it up. This should reset the BIOS and allow it to boot. The beep codes you are talking about are a memory beep code and it is normally caused by adding memory or a loose memory stick. Also try pulling the existing memory and resetting it.

Laptop won't power up

Have you tried to start in safe mode? (hold the f8 key while booting). This will allow you to go back to a boot sequence that worked. You will need to go to start and select restore. Could be under accessories

Does not power stay on

try this with just the ac plugged in and the battery removed. Sometimes the battery, when fully discharged, can cause the system to shut down.
