Color Cartridge error messages requiring replacement every few months

I have replaced the color print cartridge over 6-times in the past two years, and I print mostly black and white, and print about 12 pages per month on average on this printer. Sometimes I replace the cartridge, then have to replace it again in a couple of weeks due to the error messages. Now, I have a collection of brand new unusable cartridges, at a cost that is more than this printer cost new. Now, I do not use this printer and considering throwing it away as HP provided no adequate online download fixes for me, nor would they provide any warranty service since the printer was out of warranty. Do you have any suggestions on a fix?

I have gone through 2 refilled color cartidges and it gives me an error message. When that happens I can't use it at all. It won't let me scan or copy or print in black.

Issue The message Insert color Cartridge displays on the control panel of the product. This error usually occurs when the print cartridge or the print carriage contacts need cleaning, or when a remanufactured or refilled ink cartridge is being used. Solution To resolve the issue, follow these steps in the order given. Step one: Remove the print cartridge

  1. Turn the product on.
  2. Open the product to access the print cartridge.
  3. After the print carriage (the part that holds the print cartridges) stops moving, unplug the power cord. NOTE: Do not use the power button to turn off the product because the print cartridge will not be able to be removed.
  4. Remove the color print cartridge.
  5. Make sure that the part number on the cartridge is the correct part number for the product.
Step two: Clean the cartridge contacts
  1. Lightly moisten a cotton swab or lint-free cloth (like a coffee filter) with distilled, filtered, or bottled water. CAUTION: Tap water may contain contaminants that can damage the print cartridge.
  2. Clean the electrical contacts of the cartridge with the swab or cloth. Figure 1: Electrical contacts Color Cartridge error messages requiring replaceme - c00055424.jpg
  3. Wipe the contacts with a dry, cotton cloth to dry the contacts and finish cleaning. Figure 2: Wiping the contacColor Cartridge error messages requiring replaceme - c00055425.jpgrc="/uploads/images/c00055425.jpg" alt="c00055425.jpg" class="h_mi" />
  4. Reinsert the cartridge and lock it in place.
  5. Close the product and plug in the power cord.
  6. If the error message continues, repeat the steps to clean the cartridge contacts once more.
Step three: Clean the print carriage contacts
  1. Lightly moisten a cotton swab or lint-free cloth (like a coffee filter) with distilled, filtered, or bottled water. CAUTION: Tap water may contain contaminants that can damage the print cartridges.
  2. Remove both print cartridges in order to access the print carriage contacts.
  3. Clean the electrical contacts of the print carriage with the swab or cloth. Figure 3: Cleaning the carrColor Cartridge error messages requiring replaceme - c00130268.jpg (the model might look slightly different) c00130268.jpg

  5. Wait five minutes for the contacts to dry.
  6. Plug in the power cord. The product will begin to reinitialize. Wait until the process is complete before proceeding.
  7. When prompted, reinsert the print cartridges and then close the product.
Step four: Replace the print cartridge Replace the print cartridge indicated by the error message. If the error message continues, replace both cartridges. NOTE: If using refilled or remanufactured cartridges, or non-HP cartridges, replace them with new HP cartridges . HP cannot guarantee that refilled or non-HP cartridges will function correctly in HP products. If a new HP ink cartridge is defective, return it to the place of purchase with the receipt, or contact HP to obtain a replacement. Step five: Service the Product If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product. Cause The error message could display for one of the following reasons:
  • Even if the cartridge is new, it might need to be cleaned. Print cartridges have a substance on the contacts to keep them from corroding during storage. This substance may cause poor electrical contact between the print carriage and the print cartridge.
  • The cartridge that is indicated in the message might not be the one that is causing the failure. The cartridges are electronically connected through the printed circuit board.

INkCartrige error 50c. Will not print. Display this note each time I try to make copy or print from computer.

Hi there

You should always mention the printer model as well as what operating system you use.

This is what i found on LEXMARK's website about your error, and it seems you have one or 2 faulty cartridges, or you are using compatible cartridges instead of Lexmark Originals:

Dell A940 prints black but doesn't print in color. I installed a new color cartrige and the 50c error went away, but still doesn't print in color...

Hi there Error 50c
This is for yours.
Regarding the Dell A940 "Error 50c"....the user guide doesn't seem to mention "Error 50c". They do, however, mention a "Cartridge Error" on page 52 of the manual. They claim this means that the printer has detected a short circuit (fuse/resister) in the cartridge. As you may or may not have noticed in the manual, this is what they recommend doing about it:

1) Press Power to turn the printer off.

2) Lift the printer cover/lid (scanner unit) until the scanner support holds it open.

3) Turn the printer on.
The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.

4) Remove the color ink cartridge.

5) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.
If the error message displays again, replace the black cartridge with a new black cartridge.

If the error message does not display, repeat steps 1–3 and then go to step 6.

6) Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black ink cartridge.

7) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.

If the error message displays again, replace the color cartridge with a new
color cartridge.
If there is no error message (indicated by flashing lights), repeat steps 1–3 and then reinstall both ink cartridges.
8) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.

If you get the error message again, while both cartridges are installed, replace both of the cartridges.

Basically, what they want you to determine is,....if the short circuit is with the "black ink" cartridge or the "color ink" cartridge and then replace the cartridge that has the problem.

You may have to buy a new cartrige.
Please all I ask is call back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one, so I will keep on helping.

    Can't print in color

How long have you tried to print color? If it hasn't been very long ago, then check your printer settings and make sure the "print in grayscale" option is not checked. If it has been a while since printing in color, your ink could have dried out. That happens. If so, you will need to replace the cartridge.
