This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Check to make sure the batteries you are using have enough strength and volt power, if not it wont work. If they are really cheap, and last only a weak in the remote, they wont power up a camera.
There could be several thing that could cause this problem like a bad lens. the battery might have to be left out of the camera for 24 hr to discharge the battery, a damaged main board. a defective power button. try taking out the memory card to see if that fixes it. repairs on this unit can start any where from 65.00 and up. goto www.digitalcamrepair.com if you need repair service.
I tired to do this with my SD600 and could not figure it out but I think it is possible with some changes to the camera like this http://lifehacker.com/387380/turn-your-point+and+shoot-into-a-super+camera anyway I have not tried it because they don't support the sd600 so I have no idea if this is safe or works.
It may be the SD memory card causing the problem. I just bought a G7. When I turned it on without an SD card, no problem. I put it my old cheap SD card and it wont turn on. I take out the memory card and battery, then insert the Canon SD card and battery and turn it on, no problem.
Hope this helps someone.
