When this happens to me I usually solve it by taking the disk to the PC and letting Nero or some other app format it a few times with the quick format, and then once with the long one. If that doesn't work you still maybe able to use the disk on the PC but not the recorder (you can look at the under side of the disk and see the area thats not formating properly is a different color). My biggest problems are with Memorex disks doing this, they're junk. Pick a brand like Verbatim, I rarely have problems with them, and if they cost more so what, I don't save money with disks that will not work. Avoid Sony at all cost.

Unable to record

For several months I had a similar problem which was resolved using a cleaning disk. Finally that didn't help. I opened up the DVD recorder - removed a guard to prevent you from looking directly at the laser lens. I gently cleaned the lens with 91% alcohol on a cotton swab and now it records fine!!!!

Unit will play pre-recorded dvd's but when trying to record on any blank dvd disc it say's read then preparing and then invaid disc ?

Older DVD players (as well as some lower end products) will not play computer recorded disks. Another option may be which DVD are you recording on. DVD+R or DVD-R. Some players will only play one version. (usually -R I believe). Or could be a problem with youtr authoring program. Try a different program and/or type of DVD Recordable disk.
