May be your Num Lock key is on. In most of the laptop Number and Alphabet are together so . Find out the Num Lock Key and on the key board and Off it by pressing the Key.

there is a large hole in the keypad user manual for the keypad on your laptop almost as if there is no number lock installed
the closest that I can get on the net is that the function key adds extra keys to the board
however with out a board to practice on that is not much use
next suggestion is to take the laptop to a dell service agent( maybe a shop that retails dell products ) and see if there is anyone there with information on the keyboard that can show you how to get the number lock to operate
It has to be on the board probably in the layers of the function key and with help it will be revealed
on a normal board the number lock has a small square box with 1in it
so that symbol appearing when function is used may be the key you want

You must be talking about the keyboard not the motherboard. If allot of keys and characters not working you might have to have the keyboard replaced.

Still? Was this the problem before? I have seen viruses that effect the keys. Download and run AVGFREE, MALWARE BYTES, and SUPERANTISPYWARE. Once these ae run, now how is the keyboard? If still a problem goto START, Run and type MSCONFIG. Once this is on the screen then select Disgnostic Startup. Save and Reboot. Only the basic OS will load. If the keys still don't work then it can only be the KB, KB connector, or mother board.

Easy...first connect the hdmi cable between laptop and tv. Press and hold the 'fn' key on the laptop keyboard - bottom left corner. while holding the fn key, press and release the F4 key. This will toggle the laptop between its multiple display capabilities.

Press and holfn - press and release F4 until you get an image on the big screen.
