HP 5780-When I go to print, the computer screen basically "turns black/shuts down." It only prints about the first 5 or 6 lines and then I have to restart my computer and then it spits out a few more lines and this is a waste of my time.

Have you checked your printer settings?

try to uninstall your printer software and driver then re-install it.

  • 2 more comments
  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2008

    ok

so if you say that you have uninstalled it and re - installed it. have you done cleaning your windows before re-installing ?

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2008

you should do the uninstall first then do this procedures.

    start>run>%temp% . . . delete everything here

    start>run>temp . . . delete everything here as well

    start>run>prefetch . . . delete everything here too

after doing this, continue with the re-installation.

because i think you just have incompatibility issues with other programs drivers.

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2008

just to be sure. this is a printer problem right so part of the printer is also the printer driver and software. since your are experiencing something that doesnt permit you to print. ths problem isnt on the printer but its on the driver and software.

The printer may be giving electrical feedback to the computer

If the computer goes off with an error message (eg. windows encountered an error and need to close), then it is a system problem. In this case you will need to reinstall Windows, either from recovery Cd or Windows install disk.

If your computer turns off itself suddenly with no message , and always, and only when you are printing , this means the printer is faulty and is giving electical feedback to computer throught usb. This may damage your computer in a bad way. Unplug the printer immediately from usb.

Try an hard reset for the whole system , disconnecting all power cables for PC and Printer . Disconnect also all usb cables and devices.
Wait ten minutes and plug everything back.

If this last procedure does not work then probably your printer has a short inside and it is time for it to be taken to service.

    Regards

There is nothing to clean, if you get a message from windows then is system and ask help to early1234. If PC goes down suddenly like if there is a power breakdown then:
unplug printer immediately, it can blow your computer.

If it is a system problem, first thing to do is uninstalling and reinstalling software driver from printer disk with printer's USB Unplugged. Start from here

If you want to solve the problem here is also important that you give us details on how the computer turns off/stop/freezes when you print. do you get an error message? Do you get a blue screen with an error msg and you cannot do anything else on pc unless you restart? Do you get suddenly black screen and nothing else? does the computer freezes completely and that is all? etc.

sorry, this is how fixya works, use the link to this thread instead of uing your email. If you get black screen and pc does not turn down it is likely to be a softwar issue.

If you do not have any I recommend doing a backup of your data files before proceeding.

First ensure you unplugged the USB cable from printer to pc, this is very important.

Now open the printer window in control panel/installed printer (Win XP) or in printers (Vista).

You should see an icon with your printer there, click right button of mouse, a menu will drop down, chose delete printer.

    Restart PC

Use the printer disks if you have them and reinstall the printer WITH PRINTER NOT CONNECTED TO USB.

When finished plug in the printer.

If it fixed it , then it was a printer driver proble, if not it is windows system that is corrupted by some virus or some bad software installation.

If it still does not work click start button at bottom left hand corner.
Then click program / accessories / system tools / system restore.

Try performing system restore to some times before you had the problem.

If all the above did not work, then it means you have to reinstall windows, either from Windows installation disk , or from computer fabric recovery disk provided with computer , if you have any.
Before reinstalling the system you will definitively need to backup your data, as you can lose all data on PC during the procedure.

Let me know how it goes and if you need further help. I may be away for a while.

MY HP printer can print but does not copy

Same thing just happened to my fairly new 7520 Hp.

I shut my machine first with the shut off button and then unplugged
it for about 5 minutes. Sounds like you tried this and I believe this did not work for me either so I just went into the HP official site and downloaded my printer again. Downloading your printer from their
site is easy and quick instead using the cd. It automatically removed my old printer and installed the printer again. The problem has not returned.

Another problem I just had and because I think one of my new
cartridges (yellow) is somehow damaged. I got a black line down
my pages with a note that my yellow ink is missing. Had black line only when printing and not copying. I reinserted the yellow ink and took a light damp qtip and slightly wiped the machine screen on each ink cartridge.(this screen meets the new opening from each
new cartridge. The black line left.

Hope this helps.

HP LaserJet 4100 for all applications in windows 7. When I go to print a document and click on print. The print screen exits, the print job doesn't processes, and the print queue stays empty. Noth

I have Windows 7 and I found that running troubleshoot on the printer works most of the time and keeps me from having to shut everything down.

Go to
  • Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers
  • In the upper left of the window select File
  • In the drop down list select Troubleshoot
This usually fixes the problem, really empties the printer queue, and I don't have to shut everything down.

I have a grey/black line all the way down the right hand side of the page

Run a half test.
Put paper in the manual feed tray.
Print something, anything
When the paper is 1/2 way into the printer, open the cover.
Pull out the toner cartridge. Look down at the paper.
Does it have a black line on the right side?
If yes, replace the cartridge. If no, replace the fuser.

HP OfficeJet J5780 Vertical Black Line Prints when copying or scaning only. Cleaned rollers and changed black ink cartrigde. Still problem.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.

You need to clean NVRAM on Lexmark X5470 printer. Please follow the steps given below to clear NVRAM on Lexmark X5470 printer:

1. Turn the printer off.
2. Hold down "#5" button and turn the printer back on.
3. Keep holding "#5" button for about 5-10 seconds.
4. Press "Menu" button once.
5. Press the right arrow until display shows "Tools."
6. Press "Check" button once.
7. Press the "Right" arrow button again until display shows "Maintenance."
8. Press "Check" button again.
9. Press the "Right" arrow button again until display shows "Manufacturing."
10. Press "Check" button again.
11. Press "Right" arrow until display shows "Clean NVRAM."
12. Press "Check" button to clear nvram.

Next, try this printer self-test by following the steps given below:

1. Make sure the printer is in “Copy Mode.”
2. Press the “Menu” button once.
3. The screen will display “Copy Menu: Copies”.
4. Press the left arrow button once. The screen will display “Copy Menu: Tools”.
5. Press the check button once. The screen with read “Tools: Maintenance”.
6. Press the check button once. The screen with read “Maintenance: Ink Levels”.
7. Press the right arrow button until the screen reads “Maintenance: Print Test Page”.
8. Press the check button once. This will start the Self-Test. Once the page has printed, the printer will stop. The test is not continuous.

The self-test should at least print out a set of either a solid black or solid color bars, if not both (if you have a printer with both color and black installed simultaneously). Should this test fail, please try it again without cartridges installed. If the self-test still fails to take paper in and make sounds like the carrier is moving across the paper, this is a hardware issue, and the printer will require service. If the self-test completes without any cartridges installed, run the self-test again with only a color cartridge installed (If you have both black and color cartridges, after this test, run the test again with just the black cartridge installed). If you find that either cartridge causes the self-test to fail, please let us know.

If the self-test prints, but has lines or smudges or other print quality issues, please let us know. This includes any print quality issues - we need to know if the problems you have with your black or color are based in the printer, or communications with your computer, or the computer's software.

If the self-test prints your test bar(s) clearly, the printer hardware is not at fault.

My hp 5780 printer only prints in black and white

Please check if your Colour Ink Cartridge is not emply. If their's ink in the cartridge then try to service your printer through the Print Preferences. Your Colour Cartridge Nozzels could have been blocked thats why your printer is unable to print in Colour.

In case if both the above doesn't work then check in the Print Preferences that you should not have saved the option of PRINT DOCUMENT IN BLACK ONLY.

Hope the above will help you.
