Bill gates is both a programming genius and an excellent businessman. He formed Microsoft Corp. in 1965 and he and other visionaries like Joe Wozniac & Steve Jobs (Apple) realized that Intel's invention of the Microprocessor "chip" would make it possible to redude the "closet" size of the computers down drastically to the size of what we refer to as personal computers today.
Bill acquied the rights to the DOS (Disk Operating System) software which was installed on the early IBM and Compaq PC's starting in 1981. While more and more people were buying DOS (and Apple) machines in the 80's, Bill realized that DOS was a character based operating system No Icons, or graphics/pictures appeared on the monitor sceen - only letters and numbers - so he designed the Windows operating system to provide a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which, he realized, would be a lot more popular with users than DOS.
Windows releases 1 and 2 were not too popular - they were limited in what they could do. But Starting with Windows 3 and especially with Windows 95, the Windows operating System became a hugh success and made Bill a Billionaire.
By the way, if you want to see what it was like working with PC's in "DOS days", just click on Start, Run, and type in CMD and press enter. You will get a command box (frequently referred to as a dos box) and if you know DOS, you can create batch programs, program in Basic or Asembler language, use the Debug program (if you know how to) and live in the world of DOS like we had to in the 80's. One big difference -- In the eighties, we couldn't just key-in "Exit" forrowed by ENTER and get back to windows - Windows didn't exist!!

An AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains MS-DOS commands which are executed automatically when a
Personal Computer boots. This file is usually
located in the root directory of the hard drive or floppy from which the computer boots
(or starts) up. The AUTOEXEC.BAT file is
used to set various default settings and to run programs that should be executed upon startup. Below
you will find a list of executable statements (commands) that typically go into an AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
along with explanations their.
The AUTOEXEC.BAT file is one form of a batch file, and it is used to automate functions in
MS-DOS. In their simplest form,
batch files contain MS-DOS commands (batch file language) which includes commands for such things
as loops and execution branches and the like.
ECHO
Example: @ECHO OFF
This optional command will suppress the display of subsequent commands while the AUTOEXEC.BAT file is being executed
You can't. Even if your using a Linux based operating system it has a form of Dos installed. Without does you don't have anything to tell the computer what to do.

Looks like your Lexmark is a GDI (AKA Windows-Only) printer, as no "emulation" or "control codes support" is listed at http://www.lexmark.com/US/x7170/specs-tech.html
You may want to have a look at Printfil to enable your DOS program printing to Windows printers, including GDI and virtual printers.
Please find more info and a free trial do download at http://www.printfil.com
Pls try to download boot98se.exe and thereafter it will automatically install itself to a blank diskette. That would then be bootable and usable as a DOS boot disk. If you are running some other Operating System, this page may help you with making a bootable DOS disk.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
