The cooling fan does not come on at idle when engine is warm, but when the a/c is turned on the fan comes on.
It won't come on until the coolant temp reaches 235 degrees. If it's cold outside, it may never come on, or come on for such a short time that you might miss it. I take a small piece of paper and fold it over one of the blades (when the car is off). Then idle the car and wait. It can take as long as fifteen minutes for the car to get hot enough to turn the fan on. If you miss it, you will at least see that the paper is gone.
I believe the fan should only come one when the engine is getting hot. not at idle

HAVE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS CHECKED FOR LEAKAGE.IT IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THOSE VEHICLES.WHEN THEY ARE BAD THEY CAUSE ALL KINDS OF OVERHEATING PROBLEMS.

Better make sure the fan works. There is a switch on the radiator that turns the fan on when it gets to a certain temperature. It could be the fan or the switch. Your thermostat is not your cap, it's in a different location. (Usually at the engine end of the upper radiator hose) Get the leak check! A good garage can pressure test the system to see what leaks you might have.

theres a sensor either on the radiator or the intake manifold. it looks kind of like a spark plug with out the white part and has one or two wires going to it. go to you local auto part store and they should be able to show you diagram of where it is on the car. you might be able to take it out and clean it and then flush out the antifreeze. they usually stop working because of build up in the cooling system. if you going to do all that to it you should replace the thermostat also. do keep driving it like this because its only a matter of time before you blow a head gasket and ruin the engine.
