2000 chevy lumina. Is fan supposed to come on when car started

2000 chevy lumina. Is fan supposed to come on when car is started. Car overheats after 20+ miles. Have never heard the fans come on. Car thermostat replaced along with upper intake manifold gasket which was leaking. Car runs great untill it gets hot, then back surges. will not do this as much if heater turned on.

Whenever I am idle or driving slow my car gets very hot, and continues that way until I start to drive faster. I checked the fans and they will not turn on no matter how hot my car gets. What do I need to replace first? The fan, the sensors, relay, or something else? I would appreciate the help.

No fan comes on when engine cold start up .but it will come on when you turn on air conditioning or defrost on .if engine idling a while when temp get 190 degree the fan will kick on.if over heating you got air in system .wait until cools check coolant add more .crank engine let it idle few. minutes when start warming up turn off engine wait a while before removing radiator cap so you wont get scald.add more coolant .crank it again starting warming up turn off engine wait a while .add coolant .keep doing this procedure until your coolant stop dropping off .if you do this more than 6 times you got a leak some where.check crank level for signs.if oil level higher than normal.if everything looking good.when engine cool make sure add coolant to over flow jug cold level mark.

I have a 1999 chevy lumina and it overheats when i am just idling and the ac is on.

This problem can be caused by a faulty cooling fan, lack of coolant circulation thru the radiator ( bad water pump, partially closed thermostat) or a partially clogged radiator. Make sure the radiator and condenser in front of the radiator are not full of dirt and clogging the air flow also.

97 Chevy Lumina...wont start after car wash

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. If you have the 97 chevy lumina Car 3.1 you dont have a distributor cap. People really dont need to post unless they know what they are saying.

Now your have 3 coils on the top of your engine water could have easily got under one of them.

Now did the car not turn over at all or did it keep turning over but did not fire up.

Are both radiator fans suppose to come on together?

I found this forum site and from what I can discern, both fans should be running once engine temperature sensor turns them on. Can you switch wiring from 1 fan to the other? This would let you know whether you have a faulty motor or relay. Maybe you can pick up some tips too.
