Welcome to Fixya

Sounds like you have a problem with the cooling system. First thing you need to check first if the auxillary fans are working from the time you are the engine is overheating. If the auxillary fans is not working then the problem would be the aux fan itself or relays. if Fan is working then you might have a poblem with the water pump.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Rev the engine up to 1500 rpm. if you will get heat then there might be a problem with the new water pump. Check also the thermostat. It might be stucked in open position.

If its cooling down at idle than I would bet the cooling fans are turning on.

I'm betting there is still air in the system from the replacement of the water pump. With the engine cold, turn on your heater to full hot and the lowest fan speed, remove the radiator cap. Top off the coolant if necessary. Start the engine, let it idle through its full warm up. Keep an eye on the coolant level and top off as necessary. Once you hear the cooling fans come on replace the radiator cap and make sure the reservoir is full.

If your not feeling any heat from the heater during this process raise the idle a thousand rpm or so for a couple of seconds and then let the engine return to idle. Repeat this until you feel heat from the vents.

Take it for a drive and let us know how it went.

Not circulating

Hey Tyler,

Your posting does not indicate if you have a good clean mixture of antifreeze coolant in your heat & cool exchanger ( ie. radiator ), this valuable component of the vehicle coolant & heating system alway's need's a good supply of 50% water to 50% antifreeze which is under pressure and could hurt you or anyone standing too close to your vehice in question.

Purchase the anti-freeze in either full mixture (100%) or 50% water 50% anti-freeze just about anywhere out there with a vehicle repair isle.
Personally speaking I mix 50% water 50% anti-freeze since this is much cheaper than buying the already 50% water to 50% anti-freeze simply due to economic reasons.
After filling this radiator container, remember to alway's follow your vehicle manufacture's safety guidelines, remember there are many moving parts in the engine compartment that could hurt you or people standing around your vehicle while the engine is running.

Hope this helps!

1994 vw golf 1.9 overheating

First question is what constitutes "overheating".
Since the car has been parked for years, the thermostat could be sticking closed.
The cooling system could have air pockets and need to be bled.
The water pump may be corroded inside and not pumping enough volume.
If the gauge goes above half way, the fans should start up. But half way should be more or less normal, not hot yet.
I would look at flow problems first, beginning with removing the thermostat and driving it without one for a few days. Also check and see if there is a process to bleed the cooling system of air.

After reaching operating temp, longer than it ever

It sounds like the heater core is plugged, It could possibly be the thermostat or water pump. Have you ever had the cooling system serviced? Maybe flush the system and put in a new thermostat with new anti-freeze.

Heater bows cold when idling

Hya!
You need to bleed the cooling system.
To do this park on level ground, when cold remove coolant filler cap, start engine and leave to idle.
Have plenty of warm/hot water available, when engine reaches operating temp it may appear to boil over so keep away from coolant filler, top up with warm/hot water and wait as it may bubble over a few times before settling.
Replace cap and hopefully back to normal, Remember your Anti Freeze?
Good luck,

Heaters randomly blow cold, idle jump

Make sure your anti-freeze is full in the radiator.. If it is low, the heater is the first to go, but you wont see signs of overheating.. This I believe is also contributing to your idle fluctuation.
