The starting rope on my tiller refuses to rewind. How do i disassemble this to get at the rewinding spring?
There are two or three screws that hold the retract assembly on to the engine cover. Take these off, and pull the retract off. First, try to turn the pulley on the inside in the direction that the rope would turn it if you you were pulling it out. Will it rewind? If not, there is a screw on the top of this assembly, that's covered up with a sticker. you'll need to remove this screw, and pull the pulley out. There will be a spring on the inside of this. check the spring to see if it's broken. If not, and it's just come loose, put it back into the slot that holds it, and wind it up enough to get it back together. turn the spring in the direction that the rope would pull it out, until it won't go any more. Hold it, and reinsert the rope, tie a couple of good knots in the end, trim the excess, and let it retract the rope into the assembly. Put the assembly back on your engine, and you're good to go.
New or used unit? If new can you return it ? If not you will need to take the recoil assembly off the engine and rewind the spring. Check inside the recoil assembly to see if the spring is broken or just popped out of place on either end. If it is broken your done. You will need to find a Poulan dealer to get a new spring. If new take it to a Poulan dealer for warrenty replacement. If you want to try to rewind the spring look to see where one end of the spring fits into the housing and the other into the spool. On the edge of the puley should be a notch. Place the rope in the notch and turn the pulley it in the direction needed to wind the spring about 4 or 5 turns. If it now pulls all the rope in you are done.If not put the rope back in the notch and wind the spring tighter till the rope is all pulled in.
