No power, hard starts

Ok well its a 96 chevy 1500 v6 4.3 with a rebuilt trans about 10k old. I have had several fuel pump problems replaced it abour 4 times, luckly autozone warrentee cover replacement, the last time I notice a slightly frayed wire in the fuel pump assembly, fixed it no problems for about a month, then it died again wasnt able to start at all, just try and turn over. On the side of road dropped tank again, installed new pump. started right up. but only had about 75% power, cant go over 3000 rpms just act sluggish. Been getting worse only way its been working is b/c ive been babying it. Starting my truck has been getting worse over last couple of weeks. yesterday it wouldn't crank at all . With key in ON pos, fuel pressure is 60 but wasnt holding more than few seconds, figured fuel pressure regulator was at fault replace it, same problem, finally started went to drive and same as before. Tomorrow gonna double check Crankshaft sensor. No check engine light,No power and hards starts have to (I think) relate to each other. BTW about six months ago i was having two codes cant remember them but they were both cat releated, I (being stupid) figured it was gonna have to be replace at some point and clogged cat could cause loss of power. Anyway I cut out the cat about a month ago after i notice loss of power thinking it was the culprit, straight piped it and all O2 sensors are plugged in. Sorry post so long, thanks for your time

Have you replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires? A plugged fuel filter will cause a fuel pump to go bad because it works harder to pump. It also may cause less pressure. Plugs, wires cap and rotor will cause lack of power and fail you on a load if they haven't been replaced for a while.

What can i do to start mt 96 chevy 4.3l 1500 truck, after ive changed fuel pump, plugs, plug wires, and checked voltage?

When you say you checked voltage...checked voltage to what? did you check to see if you had voltage going to the fuel pump? do you have spark coming from distributor to wire/ plugs, is the rotor ok? need to check weather your missing fuel, or spark so we know what direction to be looking at. you can try spraying ether/starting fluid in throttle body see if it will start up momentarily, that will atleast tell you weather its a fuel related problem or not.

The truck sometimes barely starts. then once it does, it idles fine. but when you give hard acceleration, it falls on its face. not the fuel pump or the filter, and definately not spark. its a 96 chevy 350...

Lets go back to the fuel pump. I am working on one now that has the same symptoms. It turns out it is the fuel pump. Still pumping fuel, just not enough pressure. Hard start, idles fine give it some fuel and dies. One other thing that I can think of that will do this is clogged catalytic converters.

My 96 Jimmy 1500 xt struggles to start on the first turn of the key. Then starts perfectly every other turn afterwards. Mechanic thinks it might be the coil. I think fuel is ok. Must be spark issue?

Have you replaced your fuel filter lately? If not try it. My friends Chevy will do that same thing and then we change the fuel filter and it's good to go. Also try turning you key on for a few seconds before trying to start it and see if you can hear the fuel pump running. You should hear it run for a few seconds and if not you may have a fuel pump relay or pump acting up. You could also do a fuel pressure test with a pressure gauge when it is cold also.

No, the fuel regulator from a 96 will not fit a 98. The 98 is a vortec and i believe the 96 is TBI. You are on the right track though, but the fuel regulator is attached to the fuel injector spider and is one unit inside the upper intake. It is relative easy to replace just takes some time.

Its possible you have some heavy vacuum leaks? I'd inspect every thing well to identify an open line or poor seal drawing air in.
I hope this may have helped,
