Took apart, pull magnets from sides, now the thing

Yes it is everything to do with the side springy things. Get a torch and look inside there is a blocker on one corner, it needs to be lined up with the missing corner on the carbon brush.

I would try a cyanoacrylate adhesive.

The screws are roughly 8 turns in from fully out when starting to set the speed. On the lowest speed 13 revolutions of the planetary in 15 seconds is a good speed.

I understand that you took you speed lever out to replace it and you took the brushes out of each side of the unit. The reason that the unit will not start is more than like the brushes are not installed the proper direction.

1. Unplug the machine
2. Shine a light in the hole on the hole on the side of the unit. You will notice a notch or a piece sticking out.
3. Take one of the brushes (magnet looking things) put the notch and the cut out in the same corner.
4. Repeat the samething with the other side.
5. Plug in and check and see if it runs

This should solve your problem with the brushes. IF you have any more questions about this mixer please post it to this discussion.

It sounds like you removed the brushes, look in the hole and determine the orientation of the carbon brush( what you describe as magnet). Rotated 90 degrees may keep motor from running...

He will have to take it all apart. He will be able to retrieve the nut.

Did you remove those two screws? If so, Read my post on the one that did the same thing.

Or, more helpfully, take them back out.  Look in the hole, and you will notice that when you look through, the hole turns square. At the end the square, there is a little tab / square in one corner.  It is generally *not* the same on both sides. You'll notice that the end of the piece you took out (the part that looks like a magnet) has one corner cut off -- so it's a rectangular box with one of the corners gone.  Line up the missing corner of the piece you took out with the corner that has the little tab -- this allows the piece to get past the tab and be fully inserted.  Reminder: check both sides, because they're not the same. And now, more helpfully, if you're curious, check out flea markets and get a broken Kitchenaid to take apart for $20 or so. Don't mess with your nice one. : )

Without being able to see it try this. Unplug the machine. Place it on a towel on it's side and look up inside the base neck. There's a set screw at the top. Unscrew it 3 to 4 turns and twist the head as much as you can back and forth. See if it locks. Tighten the screw.

If not the pin may be bent to one side and won't drop into the slot. Does the pin lower with the head up? If it does take a pair of pliers and while viewing it from straight on bend it gently so it lines up with the slot on the neck of the base. If that doesn't work it probably has to come apart to see if the linkage is bent or has come apart inside.
