Hi

A lot of computers these days are supplied with no modem due to the popularity of Broadband.

To check if you have a modem on that computer do the following

Right click on "My Computer". Click "Properties". Select the "Hardware" Tab on the top. Then click "Device Manager". Go down the list until you see "Modems" and click the plus sign to expand it. If you see anything listed here you have a telephone modem installed.

If you want to stay on dial up and there is no modem in the list the only thing you can do is have one installed to the computer. However I cannot recommend this course of action. Dial up is a completely outdated and extremely expensive way of using the internet as you are charged each time the modem connects (like a telephone call). Even if you have a bundle of modem minutes from your provider it is still expensive and slow!!

Contact your provider and see if you can get Broadband in your area. You will not regret it - I guarantee you!

Thanks for using FixYa and please do rate my answer.

Sorry I can not tell where you are from but if you go to a computer store they will be able to sell you a Modem card, take the computer box in to if that helps, so you get the right thing. Some places will even install it for you right there

Right click on the "My Computer" icon, choose properties and then choose "Device Manager", look to see under the modem tab, if there is a modem installed. If it has a question mark next to it, you will need to find the correct device driver. If you don't see anything under the modem tab, you can purchase one either online or at a computer store like Best Buy or Frys.

ZTE MF190 Dialing problem

I have a unlocked ZTE Mf190 USB-Modem. When I put the SIM card in it and connect it to the computer, I am able to connect to 3G Internet via beetel connection manager. Is it also possible to send and receive SMS. But when I try to make a voice call on beetel voice call panel, I receive this error message "Dialing failed! Please try again!" . And also when I use another phone to call the SIM card line number that I put in the USB-Modem, I receive busy tone

I have a 2-wire modem but the net will not work while plugged into a phone jack in another room. It does work when I move my desk top and connect to the jack, which is a PAIN. What do I need to do?

Not quite sure I understand this. Your modem (do you mean modem as in dial-up or do you mean ADSL router as in broadband?) works in one room but not in another. But your desktop works when plugged into the same jack!
please confirm that you are using broadband and not dial-up as the above makes no sense. Broadband is tied to a specific phone line & number. Dial-up works on any phone line.

Modem says no dial tone detected

Good morning! It's common to a Dial-Up connection to drop the line during session as signal strength is going low eventhough modem is working properly. Please try to use DSL / Broadband connection as signal strength is 1Mbps or greater. best regards.

Compaq armada v300

If you have a router on your broadband, you need a RJ45 network cable - right next to the modem port on your laptop is a network port - this will use the correct cables you need to connect to your router.

If you don't have a router but only a broadband modem, just connect it to the USB port on your laptop, install the software and you should be good to go.

I just bought my laptop and i got earthlink dial up,so i wouldnt use so much of my mobile broadband service. when earthlink wouldnt connect it gave me an error saying couldnt connect with remote computer....

if you have wi-fi built in the computer there should be an on/off switch either on the front or the side of the computer. if it's on then it will be lite up blue i think. i had the same problem wil mine that has to be turned off. also i think there is two input jacks for the phone line make sure you have it in the right one.

When I tried to go online my Compaq Presario SR110nx gave error 680

Error 680--- No dial tone
A) Test modem by dialling a number through HyperTerminal or phone dialler. This will test the Modem without using Dialup Networking.
B) Make sure you are using the correct and/or original cable. Some modems used specific wiring which is not compatible with standard modem cables.
C) Check that you phone line is working with a normal phone.
D) Make sure the phone line you are trying to dial on is not a non-standard line, this can cause problems also.
E) If all the above are OK then get a new modem or test in a different location.

No dail tone report

some dial connections dont like the filters attached. does the new modem have more then one ethernet connection on it? have u tried it on another connection if u have on in the house? it may just be your settings in the computer. are you using the same computer for both broadband and dial up? if you are then you may need to adjust the settings in your computer, your isp should have done all that for you.
