Samsungs create a lot of heat. If there was not enough space around the unit, heat may have caused a failure of a component or two. You need knowledge, test equipment and a service manual.
The answer I found seems unlikely but please give this a try:

I had a similar problem... went to samsung.com and downloaded firmware update for unit and instructions.... updated firmware and unit is now able to copy my own tapes from vhs to dvd.
Be sure to read and following firmware update instructions carefully...
This means there is a problem with the system it is in the protect mode it will not come out of that mode untill repairs are made. More than likley the power amp is blown.
You have to "Finalize" the disc before it will play on other units. Go to Disc Menu, Second choice listed(not in front of it right now) Selections to right will offer disc Finalize. Say YES.
Take player apart and clean the lens with a q-tip and alcohol. It is very simple and mine was doing the same thing until I cleaned the lens. DVD or CD lens cleaning does not clean it well enough.
I have the Samsung dvd-vr 357. I have had a couple problems with it but I called samsung and they walked me through fixing it each time. I don't know if you have tried this or not but that is my suggestion. The last problem I had was copying from vcr to dvd. I got audio but no video. Problem was it was on dvd when i started it, it should have been on vrc. It should be set on whichever one you are recording from. Hope this helps someone.
