If you look into the paper output of the printer you find a green lever. Pull it to the front. Open scanner lid and check the position of the lever. Restart printer by switching off and on again.
Usually I've seen that happen when you use generic toners. There are 4 toner clutches down the right side, with the right cover off you can see which clutch is doing the grinding. Many of the generics are overfilled and hard to turn and will make the noise until you loosen them by hand turning them til they loosen up, or just replacing.
Press the "FAX" bottom, press menu, press arrow until you hit "FAX set-up", press OK, press arrow until you hit "sending", press OK, press arrow unti you hit "Send Report", press OK and press arrow to "ON" and press OK and it will saved.
Everytime you faxed something it generate a report.
Hard to tell without hearing it. But, if it is doing it all the time it is turned on but not in use most of the time that would be a fan making the noise. The other suspect would be a fault toner cartridge or the fuser. you may need to have a tech look at this.
Hope that helps...
