Philips DVD +rw DVD 8801

I have a Delll Dimension 5510 running XP. I have internal Philip DVD buner. The problem is the burner will not create a DVD. Dell support said the only fix was to reload the OS. Some of my MCSE friends say that this is wrong. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Ok, Intersil lost a huge sale on this one. It turns out that Intersils chip is no good, and when I contacted them for a replacement they said that it was discontinued and no one on the web sells it. No power is coming out of intersills chip to power the lasers, thats what the promblem is! How many computers did Dell sell with this drive? Millions? How many DVD drives of this design could be fixed with this chip replacement instead of going into the land fill? Millions. How much did intersil lose in sales by not selling a replacement chip to fix this problem? Millions. Did they go and redesign a new, better replacement chip? NO! Its not Phillips fault. Lasers did work! I tested them on my machine. I only burned 10 DVD disks before my DVD drive broke.

I have the same problem with the 8801. I took it apart and don't see any laser light coming out. Has anybody tried to fix the laser on this thing yet?

Actually If all your case are the same like mine than you can't use your drive because the windows can't load the driver for it ...
You can see this in Device Manager... Right Click on My Computer --> Properties --> Hardware --> Device Manager...

I have a little yellow circle with an exclamation in it next to the drive showing that there is no device driver loaded for the drive...

If I Uninstall it and select Scan for new hardware icon then I get the same situation back...

So no idea what to do...!

Interesting! If I attempt to boot from a CD or DVD then it is OK!!!!!!!!!!!!
So it seems like my drive does not have any phisical damage...
It seems to be the windows....

So on my computer does not make any sense to install an other DVD writing software because the drive is not even in the My computer......

I hope someone else can figure something out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Andy

I'd first try another burning programming to see if it works. if not I'd try the drive on a different pc to ensure its not the drive. if the drive works on another pc then i will reload the os and dell recommended if it doesnt works i'd returen if for warrenty if it has any or i'd replace the drive myself :)

Let me know what happens :)

After some digging, I found a driver that may be a possible solution for your Phillips DVD8801 problems. http://www.bioticaindia.com/download.php?file=dvd8801 is the download link I've found. I did not scan this download for viruses or malware, nor have downloaded this driver. I suggest scanning it before running it. If this does not work, reinstalling the OS if possible without a cd/dvd drive and updating the drivers if possible with your version of windows, linux, or other OS could work. If neither of these methods work, see about getting a refund for your DVD drive and buy yourself one off of TigerDirect.com or Newegg.com.

Philips 8801 Drive Has Disappeared

Try this:

Uninstall the hardware in the device manager.

Restart and go into safe mode with GUI and networking.

Go into Control panel -> (Performance&Maintenance) System -> System Restore tab.

Save a restore point.

Go back to the last restore point.

Restart PC.

*If anywhere in the System panel you see a Dell restore/repair or Dell backup/revert icon, info, etc, that would be the way to go. Dell ought to have its own system self-repair buried somewhere on the harddrive that should be accessable through the control panel, start/programs menu, or in the boot/safe mode logon process.

Please reply if this does not help and I will continue to assist you.
